Is ‘Desensitization’ for Ragweed Hay Fever Immunologically Specific?

International Archives of Allergy and Immunology, 1972
Cell reactivity (the peak percentage release of histamine) to ragweed antigen E and timothy pollen extract was studied in the leukocytes of children chosen for clinical ragweed sensitivity and treated with that antigen. At the beginning of therapy all children had responded to antigen E with >50% histamine release.

Induction of immunologic tolerance: Desensitization to occupational allergens

Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, 1986
Contact sensitivity is a major cause of skin disease and industrial morbidity. The incidence of industrial dermatitis in a number of industries is listed in Table I. The purpose of this investigation was to develop a means of specifically suppressing the development of contact sensitivity to simple chemicals with a common exposure in industry. A simple

Immunologic observations during desensitization and maintenance of clinical tolerance to penicillin

Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, 1983
A nurse anesthetist who had experienced four systemic allergic reactions attributed to penicillin exposure was safely and successfully desensitized to penicillin despite predominantly minor determinant allergy (benzyl penicilloate skin test was positive at 1:100,000 dilution of standard 10 mM solution).

Penicillin desensitization: correlation of clinical and immunological events using an in vitro model

Clinical & Experimental Allergy, 1972
SummaryA patient with actinomycosis was found to have immediate hypersensitivity to penicillin by previously described skin testing methods as well as by a recently described in vitro system utilizing rat peritoneal mast cells. Desensitization to penicillin became imperative, but in using the classical route (the intracutaneous route), systemic ...

Immunologic parameters and viral infections in patients desensitized with intravenous immunoglobulin and rituximab

Transplant Immunology, 2011
Desensitization with IVIG and rituximab followed by transplantation with alemtuzumab or daclizumab induction is an effective clinical protocol. Here, we examined the effects of this protocol on immune cell number, T cell function by Cylex ImmuKnow®, CMV-specific CD8+ T cell (CMV-Tc) activity, total and viral-specific immunoglobulin levels and viral ...

Overcoming Immunologic Barriers to Kidney Transplantation: Desensitization and Paired Donation

Current Surgery Reports, 2016
Renal transplantation offers a significant survival benefit over dialysis for patients with end-stage renal disease. Furthermore, transplantation with a living donor kidney offers superior survival when compared to a deceased donor. However, supply of transplantable kidneys continues to fall short of demand; living donation offers a solution to help ...

Long-term IgE immunological tolerance to peanut allergens: An alternative to Noon’s daily desensitization paradigm

Cellular Immunology, 2022
Herein, we show that profound afferent long-term peanut-allergen-specific IgE immunological tolerance for 3 to 9 months induced sustained unresponsiveness (SU) in naïve or peanut-sensitized rodents after peanut allergen immunization. Rodents were vaccinated sublingually with a peanut allergen extract or recombinant peanut allergen in chenodeoxycholate (

Insulin allergy. Clinical and immunological effects of specific desensitization

Acta Diabetologica Latina, 1969
Five patients with insulin allergy were desensitized with porcine insulin according to the method of Urbach and Gotlieb. The diagnosis of insulin allergy was based on clinical manifestations, positive skin tests, and, moreover, on positive Prausnitz-Kustner (P.K.) reactions in 2 cases. Successful desensitization was obtained in 3 cases.
