In Vitro Reconstruction of Axonal Heat Sensing with a Photothermal Nerve‐on‐a‐Chip

open access: yesSmall, EarlyView.
A photothermal nerve‐on‐a‐chip platform is presented that enables precise, localized heating of sensory axons with simultaneous electrical recording. The system reveals millisecond‐scale dynamics of heat‐evoked neural activity and provides a new approach to study how temperature‐dependent ion channel behavior is translated into axonal firing.

Preliminary investigation of equine veterinary hospital staff attitudes towards pain assessment in a single centre

open access: yesVeterinary Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Despite the availability of several equine pain assessment tools, their use in equine veterinary practice appears limited compared to small animal practice. This study explores potential barriers to equine pain assessment, as reported by staff at a single UK equine teaching hospital.

Clinical characteristics of immediate allergic adverse reactions to intravenous amoxicillin‒clavulanic acid in conscious dogs

open access: yesVeterinary Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Amoxicillin‒clavulanic acid (AMC) is one of the most frequently used antibiotics in small animal practice, and reports on adverse reactions are scarce. The aim of this study was to describe the clinical characteristics of immediate allergic adverse reactions to intravenous (IV) AMC in conscious dogs. Methods The medical records of a

Randomized controlled trial investigating web-based, therapist delivered eye movement desensitization and reprocessing for adults with suicidal ideation

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychiatry
IntroductionPromising preliminary evidence suggests that EMDR may reduce suicidal ideation (SI) when used to treat Major Depressive Disorder, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, and trauma symptoms in the context of acute mental health crises.

Pathophysiological role of extrasynaptic GABAA receptors in typical absence epilepsy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
GABA is the principal inhibitory neurotransmitter in the mammalian CNS. It acts via two classes of receptors, the GABAA, a ligand gated ion channel (ionotropic receptor) and the metabotropic G-protein coupled GABAB receptor.

Abattoir antemortem inspection protocol: Observation of unloading improves detection of transport welfare compromises in livestock

open access: yesVeterinary Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Ensuring livestock welfare throughout the production chain, including transport, is an ethical and regulatory imperative. However, protocols to assess transport‐related welfare during routine abattoir inspections are not standardised, including antemortem (AM) inspection by an official veterinarian at UK abattoirs.

Lateral Habenula contribution in Nicotine addiction : focus on Dopamine, GABA and Serotonin Interactions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Compelling evidence has shown a pivotal role of dopaminergic function in drug addiction. Recently, the Habenula (Hb) has attracted a great deal of attention as another target for nicotine in the brain because of its role in regulating dopamine (DA ...

The multifaceted functions of β-arrestins and their therapeutic potential in neurodegenerative diseases

open access: yesExperimental and Molecular Medicine
Arrestins are multifunctional proteins that regulate G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) desensitization, signaling, and internalization. The arrestin family consists of four subtypes: visual arrestin1, β-arrestin1, β-arrestin2, and visual arrestin-4 ...
