Size-dependent desiccation tolerance in adult and juvenile introduced freshwater Japanese mystery snails (Cipangopaludina japonica, previously Heterogen japonica) [PDF]

open access: yesAquatic Invasions
Freshwater Japanese mystery snails (Cipangopaludina japonica, previously Heterogen japonica) were introduced to North America from Asia in the early 1900s and have colonized many lake and river systems across the United States (US).

XvGoIS, a galactinol synthase is transcriptionally upregulated under water deficit : the role of raffinosaccharides in abiotic stress tolerance in the resurrection plant Xerophyta viscosa (Baker)

open access: yes, 2005
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 84-102).As part of an ongoing project to genetically manipulate maize for increased abiotic stress tolerance, we have isolated and identified a number of genes from the resurrection plant Xerophyta viscosa ...

Assessing desiccation tolerance of ferns under various humidity conditions

open access: yes, 2023
Desiccation-tolerant (“resurrection”) plants are unique in their ability to dry out and temporarily stop metabolism and then resume function when rehydrated.

Differential gene expression in Pyropia columbina (Bangiales, Rhodophyta) under natural hydration and desiccation conditions

open access: yesLatin American Journal of Aquatic Research, 2013
In rocky shores, desiccation is triggered by daily tide changes, and experimental evidence suggests that local distribution of algal species across the intertidal rocky zone is related to their capacity to tolerate desiccation.

Changes in desiccation tolerance and respiratory rates of immature Caesalpinia echinata Lam. Seeds

open access: yesJournal of Seed Science
: Seed storage is an important tool for ex situ conservation. Orthodox seeds can be stored for long periods, but recalcitrant seeds generally only for short periods.

Seta‐Inspired Mechano‐Intelligent Janus Bandage with Coordinated Adhesion–Contraction for Minimizing Scarring

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
We developed a bioinspired mechano‐intelligent Janus bandage (MIB) with a hydrophobic flat exterior and a hydrophilic interior featuring gecko‐mimicking wedged microstructures, fabricated via micromolding and anisotropic plasma treatment. The MIB dynamically synchronizes adhesion and contraction, enabling precise force modulation.

Acinetobacter baumannii utilizes a novel protective factor to combat desiccation-induced oxidative stress.

open access: yesPLoS ONE
One of the factors that facilitates the nosocomial spread of the frequently multidrug-resistant pathogen Acinetobacter baumannii is its ability to persist on dry surfaces for weeks.

Desiccation Tolerance as the Basis of Long-Term Seed Viability

open access: yes, 2020
Desiccation tolerance appeared as the key adaptation feature of photoautotrophic organisms for survival in terrestrial habitats. During the further evolution, vascular plants developed complex anatomy structures and molecular mechanisms to maintain the ...

Unravelling the Secret of Sulfur Confinement and High Sulfur Utilization in Hybrid Sulfur‐Carbons

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Thermal condensation of inverse vulcanized sulfur‐carbon hybrids enables a bottom‐up sulfur confinement strategy, in which a protective carbon phase is progressively constructed around sulfur species. The resulting carbon nanodomains covalently tether sulfur chains and stabilize radical intermediates. This integrated architecture effectively suppresses
