The Problem of Formulating Design Problems : A Typology of Design Briefs

open access: yes, 2020

One size does not fit all: An in vitro evaluation of the effects of bezafibrate and medroxyprogesterone acetate on human SH‐SY5Y and U‐87 MG cancer cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Drugs previously repurposed to target blood cancers reduced neuroblastoma and glioblastoma cell growth and viability. However, their levels of anticancer activity were different and their clinical application may be problematic due to side effects at effective doses.

The crystal structure of the Borrelia burgdorferi nicotinamidase BBE22 resolves a long‐standing annotation error

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The crystal structure of Borrelia burgdorferi nicotinamidase (PncA/BBE22) reveals the correct full‐length protein initiated from a non‐canonical AUU start codon. The structure validates previous biochemical findings and resolves a long‐standing annotation error, demonstrating that the truncated database sequence is structurally incompatible with the ...

Tame, Wicked, and Aporetic Problems in Design

open access: yesShe Ji: The Journal of Design, Economics and Innovation
The article elucidates a type of problem Rittel and Webber did not acknowledge. The underlying assumption about tame and wicked problems is that they are mutually exclusive (any problem can be either wicked or tame but cannot be both or partially wicked ...

Pathways and pitfalls: a qualitative study of student experiences in biomedical science education

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Biomedical science students from underrepresented backgrounds face barriers including financial strain, disrupted laboratory access and cultural exclusion. Peer networks provide vital support when institutional systems are difficult to navigate. To create inclusive learning environments and achieve academic success, educators should blend active, hands‐

Protocol for quantifying miRNA trafficking across the endosomal membrane

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
An in vitro protocol measures miRNA uptake into endosomes isolated from mammalian cell extracts, which are free of subcellular contaminants. Performed at 37 °C in the presence of ATP, it ensures the import of single‐stranded miRNA into the endosomal lumen.

The Problems and Design of a Neck Dummy

open access: yesBiomimetics
This paper addresses the biomechanical requirements and design of a neck dummy for assessing neck injury risks. The need for an accurate biomechanical representation of the human neck in crash tests is highlighted, emphasizing the importance of replicating the neck’s response to impacts.

Comparative assessment of crystallographic and cryo‐EM models in the Protein Data Bank

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Raw data obtained by X‐ray crystallography or cryo‐EM result in experimental maps, ultimately fitted by atomic models. Although the physical principles are different, the final results can be viewed, compared, and evaluated in the same way. With cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo‐EM) on track to surpass X‐ray crystallography as the preferred method ...

SIMULATION RESULTS OF SPECKLE SUPPRESSION IN RADAR WITH SYNTHETIC APERTURE

open access: yesНаучный вестник МГТУ ГА, 2019
The disadvantage of (RLI) radar images obtained with a single-channel radar station is the presence of speckle that leads to intensity flashes increasing the number of false alarms when detecting point targets.
