Antimicrobial Activity and Resistance: Influencing Factors
Rational use of antibiotic is the key approach to improve the antibiotic performance and tackling of the antimicrobial resistance. The efficacy of antimicrobials are influenced by many factors: (1) bacterial status (susceptibility and resistance ...

On Risk Assessment for Out-of-Distribution Detection
This paper challenges the conventional approach treating of out-of-distribution (OOD) risk as uniform and aimed at reducing OOD risk on average. We argue that managing OOD risk on average fails to account for the potential impact of rare, high-consequence events, which can undermine trust in a model even with just a single OOD incident.

Design and analysis strategies for robust microbiome ageing research
The gut microbiome changes with age and associates with age‐related morbidity and mortality, establishing it as a potential biomarker and intervention target for ageing. Realising this potential requires methodological rigour, yet distinguishing biological signals from methodological artefacts remains challenging across cohorts. This review provides an

Risk-based evaluation of subsea pipeline leak detection technologies
Continuous monitoring of subsea pipelines is the best way to detect leaks quickly. A number of systems and technologies exist for this purpose. The present work describes an analytical approach to making decisions related to best technology selection ...

An In-Vehicle Vision-Based Driver's Drowsiness Detection System [PDF]
[[abstract]]Many traffic accidents have been reported due to driver’s drowsiness/fatigue. Drowsiness degrades driving performance due to the declinations of visibility, situational awareness and decision-making capability.

Protein aggregates threaten proteostasis and cell health. In human cells, Hsp70–J‐domain protein‐based disaggregases remove aggregates, but how they assemble remains unclear. Our biochemical findings show that DNAJA2‐ and DNAJB1‐containing disaggregase scaffolds enhance luciferase aggregate targeting, and that Hsp70 recruitment by both J‐domain ...

Reconstructing enzyme evolution by protein engineering
Natural enzyme evolution can be retraced by protein engineering methods such as directed evolution, rational design, and ancestral sequence reconstruction. These approaches reveal how enzymes emerged from ligand‐binding scaffolds, developed varying substrate preferences, formed oligomeric complexes, adapted to environmental changes, and evolved novel ...

In this explorative study, the abundance of circular RNA molecules in bone marrow stem cells was found to be elevated in patients with high‐risk myelodysplastic neoplasms, and to be associated with an increased risk of progression to acute myeloid leukemia.

Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) reduces growth of HPV‐positive cervical cancer spheroids and induces ferroptosis in cervical cancer cells via blocking SLC7A11/Glutathione (GSH) axis. Combination of subcytotoxic doses of DMF and cisplatin (CDDP) further suppresses spheroid growth and drives cell death in 2D culture models.
