Sol–Gel Thin Films for the Protection of Ancient Glass Artifacts: A Performance Comparison Between Inorganic and Hybrid Silica Compositions

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
This study explores the development of sol–gel coatings for archaeological glass conservation. By formulating silica‐based solutions with low acid concentrations and applying them via dip coating, protective films are prepared at room temperature. Analysis reveals that hybrid coatings with methyl and octyl groups provide superior protection against ...

Development of ZnO Buffer Layers for As‐Doped CdSeTe/CdTe Solar Cells with Efficiency Exceeding 20%

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Highly resistive ZnO has been used as the buffer layer in As‐doped CdSeTe/CdTe solar cells to achieve efficiencies higher than 20%. STEM images and EDX mapping show that the quality of the front interface is dependent on the ZnO deposition temperature. Unusually, chlorine is not observed at the front interface using EDX when the ZnO is deposited at 100

Exploring the Molecular Machinery of Denitrification in Haloferax mediterranei Through Proteomics

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2020
Many proteins and enzymes involved in denitrification in haloarchaea can be inferred to be located between the cytoplasmic membrane and the S-layer, based on the presence of a Tat signal sequence and the orientation of the active site that some of these ...

The pH of the skin surface and its impact on the barrier function [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
The `acid mantle' of the stratum corneum seems to be important for both permeability barrier formation and cutaneous antimicrobial defense. However, the origin of the acidic pH, measurable on the skin surface, remains conjectural.

Nonionic Detergents Induce Dimerization among Members of the Bcl-2 Family*

open access: yesJournal of Biological Chemistry, 1997
Members of the Bcl-2 family (including Bcl-2, Bcl-XL, and Bax) play key roles in the regulation of apoptosis. These proteins are believed to be membrane-associated and have been proposed to regulate apoptosis through both homodimerization and ...

Transcript Identification Using Arrayed Hydrogels With TrapFISH

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
TrapFISH is a novel method for high‐throughput single‐cell transcriptomics. It embeds cells in hyaluronic acid hydrogel beads and uses probe hybridization to quantify custom gene panels. By arraying hydrogels in microfluidic devices, cell barcoding is removed, enhancing scalability for studying cellular heterogeneity and rare cell states by targeting ...

The Influence of Textile Type, Textile Weight, and Detergent Dosage on Microfiber Emissions from Top-Loading Washing Machines

open access: yesToxics
The use of washing machines to wash textiles gradually breaks down synthetic fibers like polyethylene terephthalate (PET) or polyester (PES) in diverse clothing materials, a process that is growing in notoriety because it generates microplastics (MPs ...

A multivariate calibration procedure for the tensammetric determination of detergents [PDF]

open access: yes, 1989
A multivariate calibration procedure based on singular value decomposition (SVD) and the Ho-Kashyap algorithm is used for the tensammetric determination of the cationic detergents Hyamine 1622, benzalkonium chloride (BACl), N-cetyl-N,N,N ...

Role of Detergents in Conformational Exchange of a G Protein-coupled Receptor*

open access: yesJournal of Biological Chemistry, 2012
Background: Membrane protein functional dynamics are sensitive to the detergent host. Results: Three functional states of the β2-adrenoreceptor (β2AR) are identified in maltose-neopentyl glycol, whereas all states exchange rapidly in dodecyl maltoside ...
