Community assembly following disturbance in batch anaerobic digesters displays highly reproducible secondary succession and a shifting stochastic-deterministic balance

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiomes
The great diversity of anaerobic digestion (AD) microbiomes indicates high redundancy and flexibility in the assembly of the community. Moreover, AD microbiomes are frequently subjected to disturbances during start-up and operation that require (re ...

Variation in risk category in methods of calculation of the modified fire load density

open access: yesDyna, 2016
The management of fire safety in buildings is conducted in accordance with the type of use-risk category (Building occupancy code). For Building type XI "libraries and archives" and XII "industrial, workshops and warehouses", the determination of the ...

Long‐Range Coordination Environment Modulates Single‐Atom Local States and Systemic Impact on CO2 Photoconversion

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Terminal groups on Cu porphyrins modulate the electronic states of single‐atom Cu centers through a long‐range electronic effect, without altering the Cu coordination geometry. Meanwhile, a multi‐descriptor framework is established that incorporates porphyrin regulation, hybrid catalyst properties, and CO2 photoreduction capabilities.

Iterative Optimization RCO: A “Ruler & Compass” Deterministic Method

open access: yesMathematics
We present a basic version of a deterministic iterative optimization algorithm that requires only one parameter and is often capable of finding a good solution after very few evaluations of the fitness function.

Noise Is Not Error: Detecting Parametric Heterogeneity Between Epidemiologic Time Series

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2018
Mathematical models play a central role in epidemiology. For example, models unify heterogeneous data into a single framework, suggest experimental designs, and generate hypotheses. Traditional methods based on deterministic assumptions, such as ordinary

Template‐Confined Synthesis of Shape‐Engineered Single‐Crystal Gold Microplates in Lithographically‐Defined Polymeric Patterns

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Single‐crystal gold microplates are high‐performance nanomaterials with an impressive wafer‐based application space. Progress has, however, been tempered by an inability to exert synthetic control over microplate size, shape, and positioning. In this work, control over these parameters is demonstrated using a seed‐mediated synthesis that both confines ...

Exploration of marine bacterioplankton community assembly mechanisms during chemical dispersant and surfactant‐assisted oil biodegradation

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2021
Assembly processes in marine microbial communities amended with crude oil and chemical dispersant are poorly understood and even more so when biosurfactants are used.

Blood Biomarkers and Surface‐Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy for Gout: A Comprehensive Review

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Schematic illustrating gout disease progression from asymptomatic hyperuricemia to chronic tophaceous disease, highlighting the limitations of conventional imaging and biochemical diagnostics and the potential of engineered SERS platforms for ultrasensitive blood‐based detection of urate‐related biomarkers across disease stages, with the color gradient

Contrasting assembly processes in a bacterial metacommunity along a desiccation gradient

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2014
Understanding the relative influence of deterministic and stochastic processes in driving community assembly is a major goal in microbial ecology. Here, we have investigated the influence of these processes on bacterial community assembly in the lateral ...

Forecasting GOES 15 >2 MeV Electron Fluxes From Solar Wind Data and Geomagnetic Indices

open access: yesSpace Weather, 2020
The flux of > 2 MeV electrons at geosynchronous orbit is used by space weather forecasters as a key indicator of enhanced risk of damage to spacecraft in low, medium, or geosynchronous Earth orbits. We present a methodology that uses the amount of time a
