TRPM8 levels determine tumor vulnerability to channel agonists

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
TRPM8 is a Ca2+ permissive channel. Regardless of the amount of its transcript, high levels of TRPM8 protein mark different tumors, including prostate, breast, colorectal, and lung carcinomas. Targeting TRPM8 with channel agonists stimulates inward calcium currents followed by emptying of cytosolic Ca2+ stores in cancer cells.

The Role of Diabetes Co-Morbidity for Tuberculosis Treatment Outcomes: A Prospective Cohort Study from Mwanza, Tanzania. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Due to the association between diabetes and pulmonary tuberculosis (TB), diabetes may threaten the control of TB. In a prospective cohort study nested in a nutrition trial, we investigated the role of diabetes on changes in anthropometry, grip strength ...

Looking into Concept Explanation Methods for Diabetic Retinopathy Classification [PDF]

open access: yesMachine.Learning.for.Biomedical.Imaging. 2 (2024)
Diabetic retinopathy is a common complication of diabetes, and monitoring the progression of retinal abnormalities using fundus imaging is crucial. Because the images must be interpreted by a medical expert, it is infeasible to screen all individuals with diabetes for diabetic retinopathy.

Comparative single‐cell transcriptomic profiling of patient‐derived renal carcinoma cells in cellular and animal models of kidney cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We generated and characterized clear cell renal cell carcinoma models using the patient‐derived RCC243 cell line—including cell culture, orthotopic, and metastatic tumors—via single‐cell RNA‐sequencing for comparisons between models and patient tumor datasets.

Development of deep learning algorithms to categorize free-text notes pertaining to diabetes: convolution neural networks achieve higher accuracy than support vector machines [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2018
Health professionals can use natural language processing (NLP) technologies when reviewing electronic health records (EHR). Machine learning free-text classifiers can help them identify problems and make critical decisions. We aim to develop deep learning neural network algorithms that identify EHR progress notes pertaining to diabetes and validate the

The effects of structured intensive diabetes education programs in patients with type 2 diabetes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates morbidity rates for diabetes (diagnosed or undiagnosed) at 10% of non-institutionalized adults 20 years and older. In addition, there were 28.6 million ambulatory care visits with diabetes as

Advanced glycation end products promote the release of endothelial cell‐derived mitocytosis

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Under diabetic conditions, AGEs induce mitochondrial damage in HUVECs, activating migrasome‐mediated mitocytosis. Migrasomes encapsulate damaged mitochondria and are released into the extracellular space, facilitating intercellular mitochondrial transfer.
