세계적으로 당뇨환자는 매년 증가하고 있고 그 부작용으 로 인한 사회 경제적 문제는 더 커지고 있다[1]. 보고에 따르 면 2013년 3억8천만 명에 달하는 당뇨병환자가 2035년에는 5억9천만 명까지 늘어날 것으로 예상하고 있다[2]. 2011년 우리나라에서 실시한 국민건강영양조사(The Korean National Health and Nutrition Survey)에 따르면, 나이를 보정한 당뇨환자의 비율이 이미 7.6%에 이른다고 한다[3]. 당뇨환자에서 당뇨병성 궤양은 흔하지만 잘 낫지 않고 많은 경우에 하지절단으로 이어진다. 그래서 당뇨병으로 인한 많 은 합병증 중에 가장 비용이 가장 들고 자주 장애를 남기게 된다[4].
