On the dynamics of the mass mortality of Diadema antillarum in Barbados

Widespread mortality of the black sea urchin Diadema antillarum occurred in the Caribbean in 1983; beginning in Panama in January, and having its major impact at Barbados in September. Mortality on ten reefs surveyed in Barbados was 93.2%, with the highest being 99.9% and the lowest 86.9%.

Predation of the sea urchin Diadema antillarum Philippi on living coral

On the coral reefs of Curaçao and Bonaire (Netherlands Antilles) the sea urchin Diadema antillarum is a major coral predator. In areas with high coral cover, up to 8.2% of the Diadema population (with a density of 8.5 animals/m2) was feeding on living coral surfaces at night. Acropora species are the most heavily attacked corals.

ABSTRACT The blue pattern seen when the skin of Diadema antillarum is viewed by reflected light is due to iridophores. The quality of their blueness varies with the background provided by neighbouring chromatophores. Microdissection reveals that they consist of gelatinous plates contained in a fibrous and cellular capsule.

Barium spikes are generated in the spines of the sea urchin Diadema antillarum

In the presence of calcium, Ba2+ ions, at concentrations as low as 1-2 mM, block the action potentials (a.p.'s) elicited by the electrical stimulation of the primary spines of Diadema antillarum. Lower concentrations of barium (0.1 mM) potentiate the a.p.'s recorded from spines equilibrated with Ca-Free artificial sea water (ASW).

Mass mortality of Diadema antillarum on the Caribbean coast of Panama

The ecologically important sea urchin Diadema antillarum suffered mass mortalities in 1983, first noted in Panama and then reported from the rest of the Caribbean. We documented the effects of this mortality at two localities on the Atlantic coast of Panama, Punta Galeta and the San Blas Archipelago.
