Premature conclusions in diagnostic reasoning

open access: yesAcademic Medicine, 1985
The purpose of the study reported here was to explore the characteristics of premature diagnostic conclusions in a group of physicians, medical students, and residents. When the subjects were asked to construct complete, precise problem lists from three case abstracts, premature closure occurred frequently, it could be recognized with good interrater ...

Adenosine‐to‐inosine editing of miR‐200b‐3p is associated with the progression of high‐grade serous ovarian cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
A‐to‐I editing of miRNAs, particularly miR‐200b‐3p, contributes to HGSOC progression by enhancing cancer cell proliferation, migration and 3D growth. The edited form is linked to poorer patient survival and the identification of novel molecular targets.

Sum It Up for Me: A Novel Workshop in the Synthesis of Comprehensive Summary Statements for Pediatric Residents

open access: yesMedEdPORTAL
Introduction The ACGME requires progressive monitoring of pediatric trainees’ clinical reasoning. Creation of summary statements is a core clinical reasoning skill because it requires learners to prioritize patient information and express their problem ...

Influence of perceived difficulty of cases on student osteopaths’ diagnostic reasoning: a cross sectional study

open access: yesChiropractic & Manual Therapies, 2017
Background Diagnostic reasoning refers to the cognitive processes by which clinicians formulate diagnoses. Despite the implications for patient safety and professional identity, research on diagnostic reasoning in osteopathy remains largely theoretical ...

Investigating the cell of origin and novel molecular targets in Merkel cell carcinoma: a historic misnomer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study indicates that Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) does not originate from Merkel cells, and identifies gene, protein & cellular expression of immune‐linked and neuroendocrine markers in primary and metastatic Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) tumor samples, linked to Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV) status, with enrichment of B‐cell and other immune cell

YAP1::TFE3 mediates endothelial‐to‐mesenchymal plasticity in epithelioid hemangioendothelioma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The YAP1::TFE3 fusion protein drives endothelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition (EndMT) plasticity, resulting in the loss of endothelial characteristics and gain of mesenchymal‐like properties, including resistance to anoikis, increased migratory capacity, and loss of contact growth inhibition in endothelial cells.

Structure induction in diagnostic causal reasoning.

open access: yesPsychological Review, 2014
Our research examines the normative and descriptive adequacy of alternative computational models of diagnostic reasoning from single effects to single causes. Many theories of diagnostic reasoning are based on the normative assumption that inferences from an effect to its cause should reflect solely the empirically observed conditional probability of ...
