Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Microbiome−host proteostasis crosstalk—An emerging perspective on mechanisms and interventions toward healthy longevity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Proteostasis and the gut microbiota play a key role in shaping host physiology. Microbiota‐derived metabolites, vitamins, and RNA modulate host proteostasis. Findings from model systems, including C. elegans, indicate microbes can either stabilize or disrupt host proteostasis.

Diagnostic value and safety of contact laser-assisted endobronchial ultrasound-guided tunnel drilling biopsy in mediastinal and hilar lymphadenopathy: a retrospective study

open access: yesFrontiers in Medicine
IntroductionMediastinal and hilar lymphadenopathies are primarily diagnosed pathologically. Contact laser-assisted endobronchial ultrasound-guided tunnel drilling biopsy (EBUS-TDB), which uses a laser as a tunneling and incision tool, may yield more ...

Diagnostic Accuracy of EUS versus MRCP for Extrahepatic Biliary Tract Disorders: A Prospective Observational Study [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research
Introduction: Accurate diagnosis of Extrahepatic Biliary Tract Disorders (EHBTDs) is essential for guiding appropriate management. Magnetic Resonance Cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) is a widely used non-invasive modality but may miss small calculi or ...

Investigating transcription factor dynamics in health and disease using FRAP

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
FRAP analysis of GFP‐tagged transcription factors reveals how molecular mobility and target engagement change in response to drug treatment. By combining live‐cell imaging, quantitative model fitting, and statistical analysis, this approach uncovers transcription factor dynamics linked to disease mechanisms, providing a powerful framework for ...

CT Preoperative Imaging of Esophageal Cancer: Is Inclusion of Abdomen Necessary?

open access: yesThe Annals of African Surgery, 2020
Background: Esophageal carcinoma is the third commonest tumor in Kenya with one of the highest mortality rates. Locally, the 2019 Kenya National Cancer Treatment Protocols recommend CT chest and abdomen as the basic imaging tool.

Structure‐forward targeting of claudins with synthetic binders

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Claudins form the paracellular barriers between epithelial and endothelial tissues at tight junctions and are targets for molecular binders with the goal of modulating barrier permeability. Claudin‐binding molecules are relevant in drug delivery or in altering claudin interactions with disease‐causing proteins.

Does Back-To-Back Capsule Endoscopy Increase the Diagnostic Yield over a Single Examination in Patients with Obscure Gastrointestinal Bleeding?

open access: yesGut and Liver, 2010
Background/Aims: Video capsule endoscopy (CE) can provide a negative result despite the presence of clinically significant small-bowel lesions. We therefore performed a prospective study to elucidate whether repeated back-to-back CE increases the ...

Parsimoneous Modeling of Yield Curves for U.S. Treasury Bills [PDF]

open access: yes
A new model is proposed for representinq the term to maturity structure of interest rates at a point in time. The model produces humped, monotonic and S-shaped yield curves using four parameters.
