Autophagy is a cellular degradation process involved in, for example, immune responses to pathogens and neurodegeneration. In SH‐SY5Y cells, Methylglyoxal (MGO) reduces the intracellular dopamine content, up‐regulating the expression of proteins that modulate dopamine amount (MAO‐B, COMT, and α‐Syn). The MGO‐induced increase of COMT and α‐Syn expression is mediated by the reduction of miR‐214 and miR‐190a levels.
