Diaphragm Plication and Repair

2014
Although symptomatic diaphragm paralysis and eventration differ in etiology and pathology, their treatment is the same: reduction of dysfunctional caudal excursion of the diaphragm during inspiration by plication. This basic strategy also is used for traumatic injuries or acquired hernia of the diaphragm.

A Simple Technique for the Thoracoscopic Plication of the Diaphragm

Chest, 2003
We describe a simple technique for video-assisted thoracoscopic plication in patients with diaphragmatic eventration. During the plication, which is performed with a continuous running suture, a surgical assistant maintains the continuous suture traction using a homemade hook through the port.

Laparoscopic Plication of the Diaphragm in Infants

Pediatric Endosurgery & Innovative Techniques, 2001
Background and Purpose: Infants with an elevated hemidiaphragm secondary to eventration or paralysis from birth trauma may have significant pulmonary compromise. Many require prolonged ventilation and are difficult to wean. Plication of the diaphragm has been considered a therapeutic adjunct to improve pulmonary function but often necessitates a ...

Paralyzed diaphragm—Effect of plication on respiratory mechanics

Journal of Surgical Research, 1974
Abstract The results of this experiment indicate that mediolateral plication of the paralyzed diaphragm improves vital capacity and maximum breathing capacity up to 4 wk postoperative. Although the respiratory mechanics in plicated animals never returned to preoperative control levels, there was a statistically significant improvement over animals ...

Diaphragm Plication: Evaluation and Technique.

Thoracic surgery clinics, 2022
Diaphragmatic paralysis is an elevation of the diaphragm caused by a lesion along the neuromuscular axis and may be either bilateral or unilateral. Most commonly, paralysis is unilateral and iatrogenic in nature. Symptoms of this disease may be life-limiting, and when conservative measures fail, surgical therapy may be of significant benefit to ...

Diaphragm Plication for Eventration or Paralysis: A Review of the Literature

The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, 2010
Although etiology and pathology of symptomatic diaphragm paralysis and eventration are distinct, their treatments are the same: to reduce dysfunctional caudal excursion of the diaphragm during inspiration by plication. Minimally invasive diaphragm plication techniques have emerged as equally effective and less morbid alternatives to open plication ...

Video-assisted diaphragm plication in children

The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, 2003
Diaphragm paralysis after cardiac surgery may be secondary to phrenic nerve injury by ice, electrocautery, or dissection. Although most are asymptomatic, some patients, particularly children, have significant respiratory compromise. Video-assisted plication may offer more rapid improvement and recovery than thoracotomy in pediatric patients. We ...

Plication of the Diaphragm in Postpneumectomy Right-to-Left Shunting

The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, 2017
A rare adverse event of a right-sided pneumectomy with an elevated hemidiaphragm is right-to-left shunting through a patent foramen ovale. In this case report we describe our experience with plication of the right hemidiaphragm with instantaneous hemodynamic results and pain relief, followed by secondary closure of the foramen ovale.

Robotic thoracoscopic plication for symptomatic diaphragm paralysis

Journal of Robotic Surgery, 2011
Diaphragmatic paralysis is an uncommon condition characterized by significant elevation of a hemidiaphragm, and can cause dyspnea. The goal of diaphragm plication is to improve dyspnea by correcting the dysfunctional movement of a diaphragm during inspiration.

Plication of the diaphragm for symptomatic phrenic nerve paralysis

Journal of Pediatric Surgery, 1978
Paralysis of the diaphragm in infants may produce severe respiratory difficulty because of the paradoxic motion of the affected diaphragm and shift of a mobile mediastinum to the contralateral side. Six infants with diaphragmatic paralysis and severe respiratory distress underwent plication of the diaphragm by a simple technique.
