Low-frequency diaphragmatic fatigue in spontaneously breathing humans

Journal of Applied Physiology, 1988
We used transdiaphragmatic peak twitch tension (PTT) elicited by bilateral phrenic nerve stimulation to ascertain whether low-frequency (LF) diaphragmatic fatigue (DF) can be induced in spontaneously breathing humans by a combination of an inspiratory resistive load (IRL) and graded treadmill exercise (GXT).

Deep diaphragmatic breathing: rehabilitation exercises for the asthmatic patient. [PDF]

open access: possibleArchives of physical medicine and rehabilitation, 1992
A new diaphragmatic breathing technique practiced without the aid of a physical corset is outlined, and the findings from a study of its application in the respiratory rehabilitation of asthmatic patients are presented. Sixty-seven asthmatic adults randomly assigned to either deep diaphragmatic breathing training, physical exercise training, or a ...

Diaphragmatic breathing training and walking performance in chronic airways obstruction

British Journal of Diseases of the Chest, 1982
Eight patients with chronic obstructive bronchitis and moderate disability entered a pilot study of the effects of controlled diaphragmatic breathing. They received three weeks of placebo physiotherapy (shoulder exercises) followed by three weeks of instruction on controlled diaphragmatic breathing.

Traumatic Diaphragmatic Rupture

Obstetrics & Gynecology, 2006
Shortness of breath is a common symptom reported by patients after gynecologic procedures. Delayed traumatic diaphragmatic rupture is a rare cause of shortness of breath. This report describes the diagnosis and management of a patient with a delayed presentation of a ruptured right hemidiaphragm after a laparotomy for a pelvic mass.Although rare ...

Immersion vs pressure-breathing and diaphragmatic function in the upright position

Respiration Physiology, 1979
In seven anesthetized dogs, immersion in the upright position to mid-neck level (IM) was compared to pressure breathing (PB) under dry conditions during constant-stimulus diaphragmatic contraction (EPS). The comparison was in terms of EPS-induced changes in alveolar pressure under static condition (Pmus); EPS-induced tidal volume (VT); and the VT/Pmus ...

Diaphragmatic Breathing Exercises

JAMA, 1975
DIAPHRAGMATIC breathing exercises have long been advocated in the therapy of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The control of diaphragmatic excursions is accomplished by (1) consciously contracting the muscles of the anterior abdominal wall to obtain preferential descent of the diaphragm during inspiration, (2) assuming the ...

Diaphragmatic perfusion heterogeneity during exercise with inspiratory resistive breathing

Journal of Applied Physiology, 1990
Regional distribution of diaphragmatic blood flow (Q; 15-microns-diam radionuclide-labeled microspheres) was studied in normal (n = 7) and laryngeal hemiplegic (LH; n = 7) ponies to determine whether the added stress of inspiratory resistive breathing during maximal exercise may cause 1) redistribution of diaphragmatic Q and 2) crural diaphragmatic Q ...
