Photoinduced Rearrangements of Diarylethenes
Chemistry of Heterocyclic Compounds, 2016The photocyclization of stilbenes and their heterocyclic analogs has gained major importance in the synthesis of poly(hetero)aromatic compounds. This reaction generally leads to the formation of phenanthrene derivatives or their isosteric heterocyclic analogs. Over the last 15 years, examples of a new type of diarylethene reactions have been published,

Photochromism of a diarylethene dimer
SPIE Proceedings, 2005A fluorene derivative having two diarylethene units at the 9,9'-positions was synthesized, and the photochromic behavior was examined in solution. Upon irradiation with UV (240nm), the solution of the diarylethene dimer turned yellow. It can returned to ring-open form upon irradiation with visible light (405nm).

Zwitterion Interlocked Diarylethene Molecules Order, Unconnected Diarylethene Molecules Disorder
SmallAbstract A diarylethene‐based zwitterionic molecule (DZM) is newly synthesized for the development of smart films exhibiting reversible color change and switchable ionic conductivity in response to external light stimuli. This dual molecular building block is constructed through zwitterionic interlocking and strong phase separation ...

Nanocrystallization Process of Diarylethene
Molecular Crystals and Liquid Crystals, 2011We have clarified nanocrystallization process of diarylethene in the reprecipitation method using a derivative, cis-1,2-cyano-1,2-bis(2,4,5,-trimethyl-3-thienyl)ethene (CMTE) as a typical example of diarylethene. The crystal growth was investigated by the time-dependence measurement of crystal size with dynamic light scattering (DLS ...

Diarylethenes in Astrophysics: From Materials to Devices
Molecular Crystals and Liquid Crystals, 2005ABSTRACT The photochromic properties of transparent/opaque transition and the change of the refractive index (Δn) have been exploited to develop devices for astronomical spectrographs, both as focal plane masks and as dispersive elements (volume phase holographic gratings, VPHGs), respectively.

Electrochemical Cyclization/Cycloreversion Reactions of Diarylethenes
Organic Letters, 2005[reaction: see text]. Electrochemical oxidation of diarylethene derivatives induced cyclization or cycloreversion reactions. The reaction mechanism was studied with CV, absorption spectra, and theoretical calculation.

Photochromism of a Diarylethene Having an Azulene Ring
The Journal of Organic Chemistry, 2012Diarylethene derivatives incorporating an azulene ring at the ethene moiety were synthesized. One derivative having thiazole rings showed the expected coloration reaction by excitation at 313 nm (to a higher singlet state) but not when excited at 635 nm (S(0) to S(1) excitation).
