Challenges of diatom-based biological monitoring and assessment of streams in developing countries

open access: yes, 2015
Stream biomonitoring tools are largely lacking for many developing countries, resulting in adoption of tools developed from other countries/regions. In many instances, however, the applicability of adopted tools to the new system has not been explicitly ...

Improved Stability in LiX‐NbCl5 (X = Cl, Br) Glass‐Ceramic Electrolytes Through Anion Mixing for Solid‐State Batteries

open access: yesSmall, EarlyView.
Chlorine gas evolves at the end of charge in solid‐state batteries with LiNbCl5X (X = Cl−, Br−) catholytes. This can be mitigated to some extent by introducing bromine and has a positive effect on electrochemical stability but does not impair ionic conductivity.

Zebra mussel colonziation of diatom covered substrate.

open access: yes, 2005
Invasive species are a leading cause in loss of biodiversity and ecosystem destruction. Zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) invaded Great Lakes waters in 1986 and began rapidly spreading throughout U.S. waterways.

On the potential for terrestrial diatom communities and diatom indices to identify anthropic disturbance in soils

open access: yes, 2017
A large amount of studies focuses on aquatic diatoms’ ecology and their use in the assessment of water quality. Little is known about terrestrial diatoms’ ecological behaviour and sensitivity to environmental factors.

Quantum State‐Resolved Photodissociation Dynamics Study of Transition‐Metal Carbonyl and Nitrosyl

open access: yesThe Chemical Record, EarlyView.
State‐resolved scattering measurements provide experimental visualization of nuclear motions in reacting molecules. Carbonyls and nitrosyls are typical ligands in most of the transition‐metal complexes, which undergo dissociation upon visible and ultraviolet photoexcitation.

Hydrous Carbonatitic Liquids Drive CO2 Recycling From Subducted Marls and Limestones

open access: yesGeophysical Monograph Series, Page 209-221., 2020

This book is Open Access. A digital copy can be downloaded for free from Wiley Online Library.

Explores the behavior of carbon in minerals, melts, and fluids under extreme conditions

Carbon trapped in diamonds and carbonate-bearing rocks in subduction zones are examples of the continuing exchange of substantial carbon ...

Synergistic and Antagonistic Effects of Chemical Pollutants and Parasitic Fungi on Cyanobacterial Metabolism

open access: yesEnvironmental Toxicology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Freshwater ecosystems are increasingly impacted by anthropogenic pollutants, including the widely used herbicide metolachlor (MET) and cigarette butt (CB) litter. Parasites represent an additional biotic stressor that can modulate pollutant effects on their hosts.

Nanomechanical Fracture Testing of Diatoms

open access: yes, 2015
A way to test the fracture properties of the foramen layer has been developed and tested. Cantilevers made out of the diatom silica were produced with the Focused Ion Beam (FIB). These had notches milled close to the base of the cantilever and were then loaded to fracture using a picoindenter.

Temporal community change in stream ecosystems varies by assemblage across US climates

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Ecosystem properties are temporally dynamic. Temporal variability has been shown to decrease with increasing levels of biological organization (i.e. from population to community and ecosystem levels).
