A whole‐lake experiment confirms a small centric diatom species as an indicator of changing lake thermal structure

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography Letters, 2016
In many lakes across the Northern Hemisphere, paleolimnological records have revealed that the relative abundances of the small centric diatom, Discostella stelligera, changed over the past century, with these widespread shifts attributed to climate ...

Proglacial lake records of Holocene glacier behaviour and catchment processes in Slettedalen, Northeast Greenland

open access: yesJournal of Quaternary Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Constraining Arctic catchment response to Holocene climate change is vital for understanding future environments. We present detailed sedimentological, geochemical and grain size end‐member analysis of two Holocene (~7.0 ka to present) lake sequences, S1 and S2, close to Zackenberg, Northeast Greenland.

Late Holocene environmental history of Dojran, Macedonia: Investigating the interplay of imperial dynamics and climatic change

open access: yesJournal of Quaternary Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study presents a high‐resolution, multi‐proxy reconstruction of environmental and land‐use change from Lake Dojran over historical times (last 2500 years), combining pollen, biomarkers, radiocarbon dating, Ottoman taxation records and other historical data.

Statistical filtering to aid in the sorting of phytoplankton: The effects of image library size and phytoplankton shape

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography: Methods, EarlyView.
Abstract The demand for efficient image sorting methods has increased due to technological advancements that enable more intensive phytoplankton monitoring. Both statistical and machine learning algorithms can misidentify algal taxa in taxonomically diverse samples, in which phytoplankton morphology and image traits can vary.

NANOMECHANICAL TESTING OF DIATOMS

open access: yes, 2012
A test scheme to test micro-beams from diatom frustule has been developed. The method is capable of testing both complete beams and beams made from the individual layers of the frustule. The biosilica is shown to be a very brittle material with an average fracture stress of 336 +- 73 MPa and a flexural modulus of 5.72 +- 2.9 GPa.

Diatom biostratigraphy of ODP Holes 191-1179B and 191-1179C

open access: yes, 2005
Although the objective of Ocean Drilling Program Leg 191 was to install a seismic monitoring station and to test a hard rock reentry drilling system, several good, near-continuous sedimentary core sequences were recovered during the cruise.

Harnessing microbial power to degrade hydrocarbon‐based plastics

open access: yesmLife, EarlyView.
Abstract The growing global plastic waste crisis demands the development of urgent, effective, and sustainable solutions. While conventional recycling methods present intrinsic limitations, microbial biodegradation of plastic waste has emerged as a promising alternative.

Diatom Assemblage Used as an Indicator of Extreme Inland Flooding

open access: yes, 2021
Coarseness of floodplain sediment is indicative of extreme paleoflood, but not their causes. Diatoms, abundant in fluvial deposits, may reveal the causes of extreme flooding due to their sensitivity to environment changes, but their correlation to ...
