Hydrological connectivity inferred from diatom transport through the riparian-stream system [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Funding for this research was provided by the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR) in the framework of the BIGSTREAM (C09/SR/14), ECSTREAM (C12/SR/40/8854) and CAOS (INTER/DFG/11/01) projects.

Phylogenetic analysis and a review of the history of the accidental phytoplankter, Phaeodactylum tricornutum Bohlin (Bacillariophyta). [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2018
The diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum has been used as a model for cell biologists and ecologists for over a century. We have incorporated several new raphid pennates into a three gene phylogenetic dataset (SSU, rbcL, psbC), and recover Gomphonemopsis sp.

Comparative algological and bacteriological examinations on biofilms developed on different substrata in a shallow soda lake [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
According to the European Water Framework Directives, benthic diatoms of lakes are a tool for ecological status assessment. In this study, we followed an integrative sample analysis approach, in order to find an appropriate substratum for the water ...

Responses of Marine Diatom-Dinoflagellate Competition to Multiple Environmental Drivers: Abundance, Elemental, and Biochemical Aspects

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2021
Ocean-related global change has strongly affected the competition between key marine phytoplankton groups, such as diatoms and dinoflagellates, especially with the deleterious consequency of the increasing occurrence of harmful algal blooms.

Silicon consumption and population density changes of dominant planktonic diatoms in Lake Constance [PDF]

open access: yes, 1983
(1) Interactions between silicon concentration and diatom growth have been studied in Lake Constance with data on number and volume of cells per unit volume of water and concentration of dissolved reactive silicon. (2) Concentration of dissolved reactive

Diversity of Diatom Communities in Delaware Tidal Wetland and Their Relationship to Water Quality

open access: yesFrontiers in Environmental Science, 2018
Diatoms are strongly influenced by water quality and serve as indicators of water quality degradation in freshwater systems. Here, sediment and water samples were collected from four sites in Blackbird Creek, DE, a salt marsh characterized as mostly ...

Types and Distribution of Bioactive Polyunsaturated Aldehydes in a Gradient from Mesotrophic to OligotrophicWaters in the Alborán Sea (Western Mediterranean) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Polyunsaturated aldehydes (PUAs) are bioactive molecules suggested as chemical defenses and infochemicals. In marine coastal habitats, diatoms reach high PUA production levels during bloom episodes.

Temperature and light requirements for growth of two diatom species (Bacillariophyceae) isolated from an Arctic macroalga [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
In the present study, two abundant epiphyticdiatom taxa were isolated from the assimilation hairs ofthe brown macroalga Chordaria flagelliformis collected inthe Arctic Kongsfjorden (Spitsbergen, Norway), establishedas unialgal cultures and their growth ...

Achieving diffraction-limited resolution in soft-X-ray Fourier-transform holography [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
The spatial resolution of microscopic images acquired via X-ray Fourier-transform holography is limited by the source size of the reference wave and by the numerical aperture of the detector.

Single‐ and Dual‐Atom Configurations in Atomically Dispersed Catalysts for Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Single‐atom and dual‐atom‐based atomically dispersed catalysts (ADCs) effectively address the shuttle effect and sluggish redox kinetics in Li–S batteries. With nearly 100% atomic utilization and tunable coordination environments, ADCs enhance LiPSs adsorption, lower conversion barriers, and accelerate sulfur redox reactions.
