Some Problems in Dielectric-Loss Measurements
Transactions of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, 1929The measurement of dielectric loss in high-voltage cables presents many problems that are not obvious until such measurements have actually been attempted and the results checked and analyzed. Some of these problems are not simple, and their solution is obtained only after considerable effort and research.

Measurement of Ultralow Losses in Dielectric Mirrors
Optical Interference Coatings, 1992Characterization of low loss mirrors by measurements of cavity decay time and of cavity finesse are reported around 850 nm. The lowest observed loss is 1.6 ppm (transmission and absorption and scatter), corresponding to a reflectivity of 0.9999984.

Dielectric loss measurements on raw materials
American Journal of Physics, 1980This paper describes a relatively simple experiment which can be performed by undergraduate students to study the dielectric properties of materials. Values of the dielectric loss tangent can be determined at low frequencies from Lissajous figures formed on an oscilloscope. Sample results for mineral rock specimens are presented.

Measurement of the permittivity and loss tangent of dielectric sheets
Microwave and Optical Technology Letters, 1997A previously introduced resonant measurement technique is extended to include dielectric sheets. The technique is not limited by the sheet's thickness or dielectric constant because it involves a full-wave analysis of the fixture. A method to account for conduction loss due to the surface resistance of the metal walls of the fixture is presented ...

A Microwave Dielectric Loss Measuring Technique
Journal of Applied Physics, 1946Dielectric loss is measured by Q determinations of a resonator partially filled with the sample. Double sample technique is used to eliminate dominant spurious losses. Metal loss is reduced by confining field mostly to sample. Detuning for Q determination is accomplished by large movement of small rod. Detuning is calculated by action theorem.

Open resonators for low dielectric loss measurements
Technical Physics, 2002Open resonators are studied based on the scattering theory. In particular, a theory of open resonators with a dielectric plate is constructed. This theory is used to develop a technique for measuring small dielectric loss. Measurements of the loss tangent in diamond plates show that the volume absorption in the best samples is ≈7×10−6 in the high ...

The calorimetric measurement of low temperature dielectric loss
Conference on Electrical Insulation & Dielectric Phenomena - Annual Report 1975, 1975Most dielectric loss measurements are made by using a capacitance bridge. Bridge methods however require standard capacitors. These capacitors have dielectric loss tangents of about 10−5 and loss tangents smaller than this cannot easily be measured with bridge techniques.

Dielectric Loss Measurements Parallel to Laminations
Journal of Applied Physics, 1937Laminated material is often used as insulation in an electrical device in such a way that a large component of the dielectric field passes through it parallel to its laminations. In present test methods dielectric loss measurements are made on such material with the dielectric field passing through it perpendicular to its lamination. It is evident that

Open resonator for measuring high-losses dielectric
International Journal of Infrared and Millimeter Waves, 1996The three-mirror open resonator (OR) with the prism of total-internal-reflection (TIR) for measuring dielectric constants of high-losses dielectrics is presented. The calculations of the resonator characteristics in approximation of wave beams have been carried out.
