The electric polarizationP has been expressed in terms ofξ, the displacement of the electrons, and its space and time derivatives. It is found to have a very complicated dependence and only in the first order of approximation it reduces to the expressionP=−eN0ξ, whereN0 is the density of the electrons of charge −e.

Dielectric Polarization in Polar Substances
The Journal of Chemical Physics, 1953A statistical mechanical theory of the static dielectric constant of polar substances is presented which differs from the previous theories of Kirkwood and Fröhlich in that a precise evaluation of the distortion polarization term is made. The theory is applied to the dielectric constant of ordinary and heavy water and yields 2 percent agreement with ...

Hyperelastic dielectrics with saturated polarization†
International Journal of Non-Linear Mechanics, 1980Abstract Variational and invariance principles of modern continuum mechanics are used to establish the field equations, boundary conditions and constitutive relations of a non-linear hyperelastic dielectric with constant magnitude ‘saturated’ polarization.
