Cryptic dietary components reduce dietary overlap among sympatric butterflyfishes (Chaetodontidae)

Journal of Fish Biology, 2009
This study used three different methods to ascertain dietary composition for 21 Chaetodontidae species co‐occurring on a single fringing reef in Derawan Island, East Kalimantan, Indonesia. The combination of in situ feeding observations, examination of gut contents and stable‐isotope analyses was expected to identify previously unresolved prey items ...

Dietary overlap of grasshoppers on sandhill rangeland in northeastern Colorado

Oecologia, 1971
Overlap in the diets of 14 species of grasshoppers on mixed-grass prairie in northeastern Colorado was estimated by microscopic examination of crop contents. Food availability estimates, taken by a weight-estimate method, facilitated the determination of food preferences.

Dietary breadth and overlap among five sympatric prairie carnivores

Journal of Zoology, 2006
AbstractEcological communities are shaped, in part, by the manner in which similar species consume and partition food resources. To better understand the structure of a mammalian carnivore community from a prairie habitat in central North America, we determined the dietary breadth and overlap of sympatric American badgers Taxidea taxus, coyotes Canis ...

Dietary overlap of three ungulate species in the Palava Biosphere Reserve

Forest Ecology and Management, 1996
Abstract The Palava Biosphere Reserve (South Moravia, Czech Republic) contains a vaiety of habitat types and maintains a high diversity of plant and animal species. Within this unique region is situated a game reserve for ungulate species. This paper presents the results of dietary similarity and dietary overlap of three ungulate species: the wild ...

Dietary Overlap of Swift Foxes and Coyotes in Northwestern Texas

The American Midland Naturalist, 2007
ABSTRACT Predation by coyotes (Canis latrans) has been documented as the main cause of mortality in most populations of swift foxes (Vulpes velox), although reasons for such high predation rates were often unclear. Additionally, coyotes kill but generally do not consume swift foxes, suggesting coyotes kill for reasons other than food.

Diet and dietary overlap in fishes of temporary waters of southwestern Australia

Ecology of Freshwater Fish, 1996
AbstractThe diets of six species of fish occurring in seasonally inundated waters of the southern acid peat flats of southwestern Australia were studied over a 23 month period. Fishes could be allocated to a benthos/lower water column guild or a midwater column/water surface guild.
