Wintering Together: Do Migrants Impact Residents? A Literature Review. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
This review examines the overlooked impacts of interspecific competition on resident tropical birds during the overwintering period, highlighting the need for a deeper understanding of their interactions with migratory species. By evaluating the literature through the lens of competition theory, we identify critical gaps in knowledge and suggest that ...

Local prior information and mainland overflow explain avian colonisation in a major land‐bridge island

open access: yesJournal of Biogeography, Volume 50, Issue 9, Page 1615-1622, September 2023., 2023
Abstract Aim The relative roles of intrinsic and extrinsic factors, and those of local and regional variables, in island colonisation, remain major biogeographical questions. Thus, we analysed avian colonisation records of a large land‐bridge island, defining successful colonisation as the occurrence of breeding during at least 3 consecutive years, at ...

CONTRIBUIÇÃO PARA O CONHECIMENTO DA DIETA DE CORUJAS (AVES: STRIGIFORMES) NO SUL DO BRASIL

open access: yesOecologia Australis, 2020

Effects of forest fragmentation on avian breeding activity

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 37, Issue 4, August 2023., 2023
Abstract Biodiversity declines and ecosystem decay follow forest fragmentation; initially, abundant species may become rare or be extirpated. Underlying mechanisms behind delayed extirpation of certain species following forest fragmentation are unknown.

Seasonality in niche occupation revealed through bird community functional structure in the southern Atlantic rainforest

open access: yesIbis, Volume 165, Issue 3, Page 986-997, July 2023., 2023
Seasonal variation in tropical and subtropical systems can have different effects on bird species depending on the resources they use and how they use them. However, despite recent research advances, knowledge of the drivers of the presence and abundance of species in different seasons is still limited for most tropical bird species.

Bird species occupancy trends in Southeast Mexico over 1900–2020: Accounting for sighting record absences

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, Volume 92, Issue 3, Page 606-618, March 2023., 2023
This article accounts for species absences before occupancy analyses, addressing a long‐standing concern of whether absence is true or due to low sampling effort. The authors affiliate long‐term bird species trends with functional traits in a lowland tropical rainforest landscape in southeast Mexico to help guide land management and conservation ...

Avaliação do Metabolismo Nutricional em Poedeiras pela Técnica dos Isótopos Estáveis do Ccarbono (13C/12C)

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Poultry Science, 2000
Os isótopos estáveis do carbono que eram utilizados em estudos ecológicos e paleoecológicos apresentaram um incremento nos últimos trinta anos, na utilização em estudos dietéticos em animais.

The effect of flight efficiency on gap‐crossing ability in Amazonian forest birds

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 54, Issue 4, Page 860-868, July 2022., 2022
We determined the role of flight efficiency on the likelihood of crossing a road that bisected an Amazonian forest. We found that flight efficiency was a strong predictor of road‐crossing probability: species with high hand‐wing indices (more elongated wings) crossed the road more frequently than those with low hand‐wing indices.
