Identifying Key Biodiversity Areas Based on Distinct Genetic Diversity. [PDF]

open access: yesMol Ecol Resour
ABSTRACT Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) are sites that contribute significantly to the global persistence of biodiversity. Distinct genetic diversity has been introduced as one of the metrics to estimate whether a site holds a threshold proportion of a species' global genetic diversity during the KBA identification process.

Patterns of Interploidy Admixture in Polyploid Complexes: Insights From Thymus Sect. Mastichina (Lamiaceae). [PDF]

open access: yesMol Ecol
ABSTRACT Understanding gene flow between ploidy levels in polyploid complexes is essential for species delimitation and conservation. This study explores evolutionary dynamics in the polyploid complex Thymus sect. Mastichina (Lamiaceae), comprising three taxa: T. mastichina subsp. mastichina, T. mastichina subsp.

Replicate contact zones suggest a limited role of plumage in reproductive isolation among subspecies of the variable seedeater (Sporophila corvina)

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 32, Issue 13, Page 3586-3604, July 2023., 2023
Abstract After establishing secondary contact, recently diverged populations may remain reproductively isolated or may hybridize to a varying extent depending on factors such as hybrid fitness and the strength of assortative mating. Here, we used genomic and phenotypic data from three independent contact zones between subspecies of the variable ...

Spatial models can improve the experimental design of field‐based transplant gardens by preventing bias due to neighborhood crowding

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 12, Issue 12, December 2022., 2022
Neighborhood interactions in common gardens: spatial models provide novel insights into spatial interactions among neighboring plants that can alter experimental outcomes. While the paper presents two approaches to the treatment of spatial interactions, it also outlines opportunities for incorporating genotype‐mediated biotic interactions into designs ...

Evolution of fruit and seed traits during almond naturalization

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 110, Issue 3, Page 686-699, March 2022., 2022
Almond naturalization is consistent with strong directional selection on fruits and seeds, leading to smaller and more toxic seeds encased in harder endocarps. Accordingly, we propose that feralization of this crop is, at least to some degree, driven by adaptive evolution of dispersal and recruitment traits.

The seasonally dry tropical forest species Cavanillesia chicamochae has a middle Quaternary origin

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 54, Issue 1, Page 91-99, January 2022., 2022
We use DNA sequence data to understand the evolutionary history of the genus Cavanillesia (Malvaceae), with particular emphasis on C. chicamochae, an emblematic succulent‐trunked tree endemic to seasonally dry tropical forests (SDTFs) of the Chicamocha Canyon of Colombia, South America.
