Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Cytoplasmic p21 promotes stemness of colon cancer cells via activation of the NFκB pathway

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Cytoplasmic p21 promotes colorectal cancer stem cell (CSC) features by destabilizing the NFκB–IκB complex, activating NFκB signaling, and upregulating BCL‐xL and COX2. In contrast to nuclear p21, cytoplasmic p21 enhances spheroid formation and stemness transcription factor CD133.

Discourse topic management and discussion skills in middle childhood: the effects of age and task [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Discourse topic management and discussion skills are central for intersubjectivity, learning and education, yet there is little understanding of how such skills develop. The reported research comprises two studies, which examined the skills of discourse ...

Detection of circulating tumor DNA in colorectal cancer patients using a methylation‐specific droplet digital PCR multiplex

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We developed a cost‐effective methylation‐specific droplet digital PCR multiplex assay containing tissue‐conserved and tumor‐specific methylation markers. The assay can detect circulating tumor DNA with high accuracy in patients with localized and metastatic colorectal cancer.

Cystoscopy to investigate the prevalence of prostatic utricle cyst in boys with proximal hypospadias and its implications in medium-term follow-up

open access: yesFrontiers in Pediatrics
PurposeProstatic utricle cyst (PUC) is known to be associated with hypospadias. We aimed to investigate the prevalence of PUC in children with proximal hypospadias by cystoscopy, and risk of symptom development after hypospadias repair.MethodsWe ...

Neurogenin 3 Mediates Sex Chromosome Effects on the Generation of Sex Differences in Hypothalamic Neuronal Development

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular Neuroscience, 2014
The organizational action of testosterone during critical periods of development is the cause of numerous sex differences in the brain. However, sex differences in neuritogenesis have been detected in primary neuronal hypothalamic cultures prepared ...

Next‐generation proteomics improves lung cancer risk prediction

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This is one of very few studies that used prediagnostic blood samples from participants of two large population‐based cohorts. We identified, evaluated, and validated an innovative protein marker model that outperformed an established risk prediction model and criteria employed by low‐dose computed tomography in lung cancer screening trials.

Sex differences in the development of experimental diabetic retinopathy

open access: yesScientific Reports
This study aimed to characterize the role of female sex in the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy. In the retinae of female Ins2Akita-diabetic mice (F-IA), ovariectomized female Ins2Akita-diabetic mice (F-IA/OVX), male Ins2Akita-diabetic mice (M-IA ...

Narrowing Sex Differential in Life Expectancy in Canada and Austria: Comparative Analysis [PDF]

open access: yes
Throughout most of the 20th century the sex gap in life expectancy in the industrialised countries widened in favour of women. By the early 1980s a reversal in the long-term pattern of this differential occurred in some countries, where it reached a ...

Infrared laser sampling of low volumes combined with shotgun lipidomics reveals lipid markers in palatine tonsil carcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Nanosecond infrared laser (NIRL) low‐volume sampling combined with shotgun lipidomics uncovers distinct lipidome alterations in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) of the palatine tonsil. Several lipid species consistently differentiate tumor from healthy tissue, highlighting their potential as diagnostic markers.
