Generalized Forward-Backward Splitting with Penalization for Monotone Inclusion Problems

open access: yes, 2014
We introduce a generalized forward-backward splitting method with penalty term for solving monotone inclusion problems involving the sum of a finite number of maximally monotone operators and the normal cone to the nonempty set of zeros of another ...

ERBIN limits epithelial cell plasticity via suppression of TGF‐β signaling

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In breast and lung cancer patients, low ERBIN expression correlates with poor clinical outcomes. Here, we show that ERBIN inhibits TGF‐β‐induced epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition in NMuMG breast and A549 lung adenocarcinoma cell lines. ERBIN suppresses TGF‐β/SMAD signaling and reduces TGF‐β‐induced ERK phosphorylation.

Neutrophil deficiency increases T cell numbers at the site of tissue injury in mice

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In wild‐type mice, injury or acute inflammation induces neutrophil influx followed by macrophage accumulation. Mcl1ΔMyelo (neutrophil‐deficient) mice lack neutrophils, and in response to muscle injury show fewer macrophages and exhibit strikingly elevated T‐cell numbers, primarily non‐conventional “double‐negative” (DN) αβ and γδ T cells.

A general and intuitive envelope theorem [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
We present an envelope theorem for establishing first-order conditions in decision problems involving continuous and discrete choices. Our theorem accommodates general dynamic programming problems, even with unbounded marginal utilities.

Deterministic Elaboration of Heisenberg's Uncertainty Relation and the Nowhere Differentiability

open access: yes, 2013
In this paper the uncertainty principle is found via characteristics of continuous and nowhere differentiable functions. We prove that any physical system that has a continuous and nowhere differentiable position function is subject to an uncertainty in ...

The multidrug and toxin extrusion (MATE) transporter DTX51 antagonizes non‐cell‐autonomous HLS1–AMP1 signaling in a region‐specific manner

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Arabidopsis mutants hls1 hlh1 and amp1 lamp1 exhibit pleiotropic developmental phenotypes. Although the functions of the causative genes remain unclear, they act in the same genetic pathway and are thought to generate non‐cell‐autonomous signals.

Adversarial Variational Optimization of Non-Differentiable Simulators [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Complex computer simulators are increasingly used across fields of science as generative models tying parameters of an underlying theory to experimental observations.

The nicotinamide hypothesis revisited—plant defense signaling integrating PARP, nicotinamide, nicotinic acid, epigenetics, and glutathione

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nicotinamide (NIC) and nicotinic acid (NIA) are proposed as stress signaling compounds in plants. Oxidative stress may lead to single strand breaks (SSB) in DNA, which activate poly(ADP‐ribose) polymerase (PARP). NIC and NIA are then formed from NAD. NIC and NIA can promote epigenetic changes leading to the expression of defense genes specific for the ...

A working model for cytoplasmic assembly of H/ACA snoRNPs

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Dyskerin is the component of nuclear H/ACA ribonucleoproteins (RNPs) endowed with pseudouridine synthase catalytic activity. Two isoforms of human dyskerin have been characterized: the abundant Iso1, mainly nuclear, and the shorter Iso3, mainly cytoplasmic but occasionally imported into nuclei.
