The difficulty of optimum index selection

ACM Transactions on Database Systems, 1978
Given a file on a secondary store in which each record has several attributes, it is usually advantageous to build an index mechanism to decrease the cost of conducting transactions to the file. The problem of selecting attributes over which to index has been studied in the context of various storage structures and access assumptions.

Performing Under Difficulty: The Magical Pressure Index

2019
This chapter introduces an interesting concept of measuring performance of cricketers considering the match situation under which the player performed. The difficulty level, under which the team is performing, is quantified introducing a measure called as the pressure index in the chapter. The pressure index is an inclusive measure that can be utilized

Relationships Between the Item Difficulty and Discrimination Indexes

Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1979
The dependence of the item discrimination index (D) on the item difficulty index ( p), and the relationship of D and p to the phi coefficient (ϕ) are delineated. A table of critical values of D for significance at the .10 and .05 levels, with the number of examinees in the upper group (n, ) on total test score ranging from 10 to 25 and p ranging from .

Indexical information, encoding difficulty, and second language vocabulary learning

Applied Psycholinguistics, 2011
ABSTRACTResearch has demonstrated that second language (L2) vocabulary learning improves when target words are presented in acoustically varied compared with acoustically consistent formats. The present study investigated the extent to which this benefit of acoustic variability is a consequence of difficult encoding demands (cognitive effort hypothesis)

Difficulty index of a question paper: A new perspective

2012 IEEE International Conference on Engineering Education: Innovative Practices and Future Trends (AICERA), 2012
Assessment of learning reflects the performance of an academic system. In reality, this performance is the cumulative impact of learning in each course of the program. Hence on completion of delivering a course in terms different components, it becomes important to understand the outcome produced, the knowledge and skills acquired by the students.

Critical Index of Difficulty for Different Body Motions: A Review

Journal of Motor Behavior, 2015
K.-C. Gan and E. R. Hoffmann (1988) demonstrated that there is a clear boundary between values of Fitts' index of difficulty (ID) below which movements may be made without ongoing path corrections; above this value it was necessary to use corrections to hit a target of high ID.

Distractor Analysis Based on Item Difficulty Index and Item Discrimination Index

2019
