Diffuse Interstellar Bands and Garnet Grains

Nature Physical Science, 1971
RECENTLY Huffman1, Manning2,3 and Dorschner4 have suggested that the diffuse interstellar bands may be caused by transitions in 3d ions situated in the tetrahedral and octahedral sites in the lattices of interstellar silicate grains. Manning3 has proposed that the grains might consist of iron-bearing garnets of the almandine and andradite type.

Diffuse Interstellar Bands in Individual Sightlines

1995
This paper reviews briefly the history of observations of diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) — features covering the spectral range from the far UV to near IR — in individual sightlines, and describes their relations to other spectroscopic features originating in the same clouds.
