The Diffuse Interstellar Bands and Interstellar Dust

1995
As far as we now know, interstellar dust and the diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) are not directly related; there is no really good correlation between any DIB and a specific feature of interstellar extinction. I argue that it is not useful to consider the λ2175 “bump”, by far the strongest feature in the interstellar extinction law (in terms of ...

Origin of the Diffuse Interstellar Bands

Nature, 1968
Unidentified diffuse interstellar bands may be caused by electronic transitions of impurity ions in grains which are coupled to the lattice vibrations. The 4430 absorption band has a significantly asymmetric profile, being somewhat steeper on the red side than on the blue. This feature is a prediction of the solid state model proposed for the band.

The Diffuse Interstellar Band Spectrum

1995
The location of diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) in the electromagnetic spectrum, their shape and relative position, as well as their relative intensities contain information about the nature of the DIB carrier. What follows is a brief summary of such features of the DIB spectrum as they emerge from a recent systematic survey of DIBs and from related ...

Fulleranes and the Diffuse Interstellar Bands

1995
It is discussed whether the fulleranes, the hydrides of C60,might have properties appropriate to the carriers of the diffuse interstellar bands. The average number of hydrogen atoms on an interstellar population of these molecules is expected to vary in a systematic way with the interstellar conditions, and it is shown how this variation might explain ...

On the diffuse interstellar bands and the local interstellar medium

2017
This thesis presents results from four different studies on the diffuse interstellar bands and the local interstellar medium. Firstly, a detailed investigation into the profile of the λ6614 diffuse interstellar band (DIB) is presented, which was aimed at ascertaining the origin of the observed fine structure and overall band shape, and why both of ...
