Ambipolar diffusion in interstellar clouds - A new solution

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 1979
We present a solution for the relative drift velocity between the neutral and ionized matter in a cylindrically symmetric, magnetic cloud, which contracted gravitationally to an equilibrium state from an initially uniform state. The cloud is bounded by a hot and tenuous external medium.

Observation of Diffuse Galactic Light Near the Galactic Center with ONC-T on Board Hayabusa2

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Diffuse Galactic light (DGL) is starlight scattered by interstellar dust. In visible wavelengths, earlier studies observed DGL toward regions of low optical depth in high Galactic latitude, and show marginal consistency with a theoretical model assuming ...

Hydroxylated Mg-rich Amorphous Silicates as Catalysts for Molecular Hydrogen Formation in the Interstellar Medium

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We present results from an experimental study on the interaction of atomic deuterium with magnesium-rich amorphous enstatite- and forsterite-type silicates. Infrared spectroscopy was used to examine the process. During deuterium atom exposure, deuteroxyl

Interstellar Polarization Survey. IV. Characterizing the Magnetic Field Strength and Turbulent Dispersion Using Optical Starlight Polarization in the Diffuse Interstellar Medium

open access: yesThe Astronomical Journal
Angular dispersion functions are typically used to estimate the fluctuations in polarization angle around the mean magnetic field orientation in dense regions, such as molecular clouds.

Spatial Variations of Dust Opacity and Grain Growth in Dark Clouds: L1689, L1709, and L1712

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
The far-infrared (FIR) opacity of dust in dark clouds within the Ophiuchus molecular cloud is investigated through multiwavelength infrared observations from UKIDSS, Spitzer, and Herschel.

The Multiwavelength Extinction Law and Its Variation in the Coalsack Molecular Cloud Based on the Gaia, APASS, SMSS, 2MASS, GLIMPSE, and WISE Surveys

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Accurate interpretation of observations relies on the interstellar dust extinction law, which also serves as a powerful diagnostic for probing dust properties.

Timescales of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon and Dust Continuum Emission from Gas Clouds Compared to Molecular Gas Cloud Lifetimes in PHANGS-JWST Galaxies

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Recent JWST mid-infrared (mid-IR) images, tracing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and dust continuum emission, provide detailed views of the interstellar medium (ISM) in nearby galaxies.

Interstellar grain chemistry and organic molecules [PDF]

open access: yes
The detection of prominant infrared absorption bands at 3250, 2170, 2138, 1670 and 1470 cm(-1) (3.08, 4.61, 4.677, 5.99 and 6.80 micron m) associated with molecular clouds show that mixed molecular (icy) grain mantles are an important component of the ...

Metallicity Mapping of the Ionized Diffuse Gas at the Milky Way Disk–Halo Interface

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Metals in the diffuse, ionized gas at the boundary between the Milky Way’s interstellar medium (ISM) and circumgalactic medium, known as the disk–halo interface (DHI), are valuable tracers of the feedback processes that drive the Galactic fountain ...
