Pathway for a martensitic quartz–coesite transition [PDF]
An atomistic pathway for a strain-induced subsolidus martensitic transition between quartz and coesite was found by computing the set of the smallest atomic displacements required to transform a quartz structure into a coesite structure.

Diffusionless isothermal omega transformation in titanium alloys driven by quenched-in compositional fluctuations [PDF]
In titanium alloys, the $\ensuremath{\omega}$(hexagonal)-phase transformation has been categorized as either a diffusion-mediated isothermal transformation or an athermal transformation that occurs spontaneously via a diffusionless mechanism. Here we report a diffusionless isothermal $\ensuremath{\omega}$ transformation that can occur even above the ...

The Effect of Dislocation Substructure and Decomposition on the Course of Diffusionless Transformations [PDF]
The mechanical properties (yield strength, hardness, transformation stresses) and the transformation temperatures of SMA can be affected by the combination of different solid-state reactions. In this context the combination of local change in chemical composition by precipitation processes and the rearrangement of defects by recovery and ...

TRIP/TWIP Networks Promoted via Multifunctional Nanoprecipitates-confined Specified Shear for Achieving Strong-yet-Ductile Titanium Alloys. [PDF]
Comprehensive theoretical calculation methods are employed for composition design to manipulate precipitates with deformation heterogeneity for facilitating TRIP/TWIP effects. Selected alloy exhibits dense TRIP/TWIP networks at > 830 MPa yield stress and record yield strength‐ductility synergy in titanium alloys. The results offer an individual pathway

Twin Toughening-Driven Martensitic Transformation Strategy Synergistic Improvement for Plasticity-Thermal Shock Resistance of (Hf─Zr─Ti)C Ceramic Coating in Severe Thermal Environments. [PDF]
A “ceramic self‐toughening strategy” is introduced for enhancing the plasticity and thermal shock resistance of (Hf─Zr─Ti)C coatings through twin toughening‐driven martensitic transformations in oxide scales. It facilitated the formation of stable, dense, and high‐toughness oxide scales after repeat ablation, and endowed prepared coatings with superior

Multi-modal strain mapping of steel crack tips with micrometre spatial resolution. [PDF]
Multi‐modal measurements combining X‐ray diffraction, X‐ray fluorescence and optical microscopy allow dynamic crystal recovery effects around martensitic steel crack tips to be studied. The measured strain field around the crack tip shows a significant departure from the predictions of linear elastic fracture mechanics.Due to their superior fatigue ...
