Neorickettsial Endosymbionts of the Digenea

Digeneans are endoparasitic flatworms with complex life cycles and distinct life stages that parasitize different host species. Some digenean species harbour bacterial endosymbionts known as Neorickettsia (Order Rickettsiales, Family Anaplasmataceae). Neorickettsia occur in all life stages and are maintained by vertical transmission.

The diversity of the Digenea of Australian animals

The Digenea is one of five major helminth assemblages represented in Australian animals. History of the study of digeneans in Australia is reviewed briefly to show that it has never been subjected to the kind of sustained study needed to reach an understanding of it. The Australian vertebrate fauna comprises over 5500 species.

The evolutionary expansion and host-parasite relationships of the Digenea

Control of Swimming in Cercariae of Proterometra macrostoma (Digenea)

A specific acetylcholinesterase (AChE) was localized histochemically in Proterometra macrostoma cercariae. This esterase activity was inhibited by eserine, but was resistant to tetraisopropyl pyrophosphoramide. A transverse band of intense AChE activity was observed in the posterior region of the tail.

Over the past 20 yr, recurrent late-summer mortality of dabbling ducks in southern Québec has been attributed to the digenean parasite Cyathocotyle bushiensis. This study attempted to determine whether this parasite was still implicated in the epizootics, and examined aspects of the ecology of the parasite in the definitive host.

Thetines and Betaines of the Red Alga Digenea simplex

From the aqueous extract of the red alga Digenea simplex, seven Dragendorff-positive compounds have been isolated and their structures determined by spectral and chemical methods. The taxonomic significance of their occurrence and possible biosynthetic relationships between some of these compounds are also discussed.

Experimental Infections of Waterfowl with Sphaeridiotrema globulus (Digenea)

Sphaeridiotrema globulus in experimentally infected mute swans (Cygnus olor), mallard ducks (Anas platyrhynchos) and Canada geese (Branta canadensis) induced ulcerative hemorrhagic enteritis. Sites of infection include the jejunum and ileum. The digeneans ulcerated the intestine. The inflammatory response was primarily lymphocytic with some eosinophils.
