Multiscale Soil Investigations: Physical Concepts And Mathematical Techniques

open access: yes, 2008
Soil variability has often been considered to be composed of “functional” (explained) variations plus random fl uctuations or noise. However, the distinction between these two components is scale dependent because increasing the scale of ...

Bionic Solar‐Powered Heavy Metal Trap for Eco‐Friendly Sludge Drying and Simultaneous Electricity Generation

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Herein, we propose a solar‐powered heavy metal trap (SPHT) for sludge disposal. The indoor experiments demonstrated that the sludge water content decreased from 90 % to 31 %, coupled with a decrease in heavy metal content to 6 % at most. Furthermore, the designed SPHT generated an initial potential of 0.10 V, and monitoring this hydrovoltaic potential ...

Soil Mapping Based on Globally Optimal Decision Trees and Digital Imitations of Traditional Approaches

open access: yesISPRS International Journal of Geo-Information, 2020
Most digital soil mapping (DSM) approaches aim at complete statistical model extraction. The value of the explicit rules of soil delineation formulated by soil-mapping experts is often underestimated.

Assessing Machine Learning-Based Prediction under Different Agricultural Practices for Digital Mapping of Soil Organic Carbon and Available Phosphorus

open access: yes, 2022
Predicting soil chemical properties such as soil organic carbon (SOC) and available phosphorus (Ava-P) content is critical in areas where different land uses exist. The distribution of SOC and Ava-P is influenced by both natural and anthropogenic factors.

Extra Climate Benefits From Afforestation Due to Reduced Forest Fragmentation in China

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Afforestation in China reduced forest fragmentation in 2015, transforming 51.8 M ha of edge forests into interior forests. This enhanced carbon sequestration (1.4±0.2 Pg CO2e, a cooling biogeochemical effect), while reduced albedo (−0.9 Pg CO2e, a warming biophysical effect) partially offset the gain, yielding a net extra climate benefit of ...

Including soil spatial neighbor information for digital soil mapping

open access: yesGeoderma
Digital soil mapping (DSM) is transforming how we understand and manage soil resources, offering high-resolution spatial–temporal soil information essential for addressing environmental challenges. The integration of environmental covariates has advanced

Thermally Processable, Transparent, Mechanically Tunable and Robust Bioplastics From Wastepaper

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Unlike conventional inefficient or low‐value wastepaper recycling, a directional transformation strategy is employed to convert whole wastepaper into intact bioplastics with tunable mechanical properties in our work. These bioplastics can be processed into flexible bags or rigid containers and exhibit high transparency, water resistance, repairability,
