Basic chromosome numbers and polyploid levels in some South African and Australian grasses (Poaceae)
Chromosome numbers of 46 specimens of grasses, involving 24 taxa from South Africa and Australia, have been determined during the present study. For the first time chromosome numbers are given for Eragrostis sarmentosa (Thunb.) Trin. (n = 20).

ABSTRACT Climate modelling has projected increasing temperatures and a shift in rainfall systems in southern Australia, suggesting an increase in the summer–autumn feed gap of pasture systems based on temperate species. Tropical (C4) pasture species may diversify the feed base and help mitigate climate variability in these areas.

Drought Tolerance in Digitaria
Selected clones of 10 Digitaria species were evaluated for drought tolerance in field trials. Grasses were established by vegetative propagation during the wet season. Observations on survival and growth were made at intervals throughout the 25-month duration of the trial.
