DIII-D Diagnostic Systems [PDF]

open access: yesFusion Science and Technology, 2005
The DIII-D tokamak, located at General Atomics in San Diego, California, has long been recognized as being one of the best diagnosed magnetic fusion experiments. Composed of more than 50 individual systems, the diagnostic set takes advantage of a high number of large-aperture access ports.

Divertor erosion in DIII-D [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Nuclear Materials, 1999
Abstract Net erosion rates of carbon target plates have been measured in situ for the DIII-D lower divertor. For attached divertors (Te > 40 eV), outer strike point (OSP) erosion rates exceed 10 cm/exposure-year, physical sputtering is dominant and the effective sputtering yield, Y, is greater than 10%.

Recent DIII-D divertor research [PDF]

open access: yesPlasma Physics and Controlled Fusion, 1995
DIII-D currently operates with a single- or double-null open divertor and graphite walls. Active particle control with a divertor cryopump has demonstrated density control, efficient helium exhaust, and reduction of the inventory of particles in the wall.

Increased radiation due to non-coronal effects on DIII-D and MAST-U with varying input power

open access: yesNuclear Fusion, 2022
Through SOLPS-ITER simulations of DIII-D and MAST-U, an X-divertor (XD) on DIII-D and a super X-divertor (SXD) on MAST-U were shown to have increased carbon emissivity ( P _Rad / n _e n _I ) over corresponding standard divertors (SD) at similar degrees ...

Effect of heating scheme on SOL width in DIII-D and EAST

open access: yesNuclear Materials and Energy, 2017
Joint DIII-D/EAST experiments in the radio-frequency (RF) heated H-mode scheme with comparison to that of neutral beam (NB) heated H-mode scheme were carried out on DIII-D and EAST under similar conditions to examine the effect of heating scheme on ...

DIII-D physics analysis database [PDF]

open access: yesReview of Scientific Instruments, 1990
Since June 1986 the DIII-D tokamak has had over 16 000 discharges accumulating more than 250 Gbytes of raw data (currently over 30 Mbytes per discharge). The centralized DIII-D databases and the associated support software described earlier provide the means to extract, analyze, store, and display reduced sets of data for specific physics issues.

Evaluation of DIII-D plasmas for Future Measurements of the Driven Current Density in the DIII-D High Field Side Lower Hybrid Experiment [PDF]

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences
High field side (HFS) lower hybrid current drive (LHCD) is a promising method for efficiently driving off-axis current in steady state tokamak power plants. The first test of this technology is underway at the DIII-D tokamak.

Integrated deep learning framework for unstable event identification and disruption prediction of tokamak plasmas

open access: yesNuclear Fusion, 2023
The ability to identify underlying disruption precursors is key to disruption avoidance. In this paper, we present an integrated deep learning (DL) based model that combines disruption prediction with the identification of several disruption precursors ...
