Carbonization of the DIII-D tokamak [PDF]
The DIII-D tokamak has been carbonized by the application of a carbon film covering all plasma facing surfaces. Carbonization was done in order to reduce the metal impurity influx and central metal accumulation especially during beam heated D{sup O} {yields} D{sup +} H-mode discharges.

Fast-ion redistribution and loss due to edge perturbations in the ASDEX Upgrade, DIII-D and KSTAR tokamaks [PDF]
The impact of edge localized modes (ELMs) and externally applied resonant and non-resonant magnetic perturbations (MPs) on fast-ion confinement/transport have been investigated in the ASDEX Upgrade (AUG), DIII-D and KSTAR tokamaks.

Validating the Multi-Mode Model’s Ability to Reproduce Diverse Tokamak Scenarios
A large-scale validation exercise was conducted to assess the multi-mode model (MMM) anomalous transport model in the integrated modeling code TRANSP. The validation included 6 EAST discharges, 17 KSTAR discharges, 72 JET ITER-like wall D-D discharges ...

Benchmarking UEDGE with DIII‐D Data [PDF]
AbstractComparisons between a 2‐D fluid simulation of the SOL plasma of a diverted tokamak and experimental data from the DIII‐D are shown. It is concluded that a simple diffusive model for perpendicular transport is consistent with the data. Discrepancies in the simulation suggest that impurity radiation may be playing a significant role in the ...

Performance History and Upgrades for the DIII-D Gyrotron Complex
The gyrotron installation on the DIII-D tokamak has been in operation at the second harmonic of the electron cyclotron resonance since the mid-1990s. Prior to that a large installation of ten 60 GHz tubes was operated at the fundamental resonance.

Density limit studies on DIII-D [PDF]
Abstract We have studied the processes limiting plasma density and successfully achieved discharges with density ∼50% above the empirical Greenwald scaling with H-mode energy confinement. This was accomplished by density profile control, enabled through pellet injection and divertor pumping.

ELM regime classification by conformal prediction on an information manifold [PDF]
Characterization and control of plasma instabilities known as edge-localized modes (ELMs) is crucial for the operation of fusion reactors. Recently, machine learning methods have demonstrated good potential in making useful inferences from stochastic ...

Supplemental ELM control in ITER through beryllium granule injection
Injection of low-Z granules into high performance discharges on DIII-D has been shown to promptly trigger Edge Localized Modes (ELMs) providing high-Z impurity control without significant plasma degradation.
