DIII-D research to provide solutions for ITER and fusion energy

open access: yesNuclear Fusion
The DIII-D tokamak has elucidated crucial physics and developed projectable solutions for ITER and fusion power plants in the key areas of core performance, boundary heat and particle transport, and integrated scenario operation, with closing the core ...

In search of X-point radiator regime features in NSTX and DIII-D discharges with the snowflake divertor

open access: yesNuclear Materials and Energy
Experimental data from NSTX and DIII-D discharges with the snowflake (SF) divertor configurations are analyzed toward the development of the X-point radiator (XPR) concept. The XPR divertor regime was recently realized in standard divertor configurations

ELM triggering conditions for the integrated modeling of H-mode plasmas

open access: yes, 2004
Recent advances in the integrated modeling of ELMy H-mode plasmas are presented. A model for the H-mode pedestal and for the triggering of ELMs predicts the height, width, and shape of the H-mode pedestal and the frequency and width of ELMs. Formation of

High Field Side Lower Hybrid Current Drive Simulations for Off- axis Current Drive in DIII-D

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2017
Efficient off-axis current drive scalable to reactors is a key enabling technology for developing economical, steady state tokamak. Previous studies have focussed on high field side (HFS) launch of lower hybrid current drive (LHCD) in double null ...

VUV Spectroscopy in DIII-D Divertor [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
The research carried out on this grant was motivated by the high power emission from the CIV doublet at 155 nm in the DIII-D divertor and to study the characteristics of the radiative divertor. The radiative divertor is designed to reduce the heat load to the target plates of the divertor by reducing the energy in the divertor plasma using upstream ...

Limiter bias experiments in DIII-D [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Nuclear Materials, 1990
In DIII-D, H{sub {alpha}} emission was reduced by a factor of 2--3 both at the limiter and at the inner wall by negative biasing (V{sub lim}{approx} {minus}300 V). In these discharges, the line-average electron densities were approximately the same with and without limiter bias, which suggests that {tau}{sub p} was improved by negative bias.

Analysis of Alfven Eigenmode destabilization in DIII-D high poloidal $\beta$ discharges using a Landau closure model

open access: yes, 2018
Alfven Eigenmodes are destabilized at the DIII-D pedestal during transient beta drops in high poloidal beta discharges with internal transport barriers (ITBs), driven by n=1 external kink modes, leading to energetic particle losses.

Radiation shielding analysis for DIII-D

open access: yesIEEE Thirteenth Symposium on Fusion Engineering, 2003
A radiation shield has been added to the DIII-D tokamak facility to allow an increased neutron production rate without an increased radiation exposure to the public and to personnel. The goal is to reduce the biological dose level at the site boundary by a factor of 300.

Observation of lobes near the X-point in resonant magnetic perturbation experiments on MAST

open access: yes, 2012
The application of non-axisymmetric resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) with a toroidal mode number n=6 in the MAST tokamak produces a significant reduction in plasma energy loss associated with type-I Edge Localized Modes (ELMs), the first such ...

Observation of long-radial-range-correlation in turbulence in high-collisionality high-confinement plasmas on DIII-D

open access: yesNuclear Fusion, 2023
We report on the observation of spatially asymmetric turbulent structures with a long radial correlation length in the core of high-collisionality H -mode plasmas on DIII-D tokamak.
