This paper presents a novel sparse matrix converter configuration that needs no bulky energy storage capacitors or inductors, and employs only unidirectional power semiconductor switches. Diode-clamped multilevel converter topology for battery cells charging applications

The charger can directly charge individual battery cells based on their state-of-charge (SOC) using multilevel converter topology.
