A Novel STATCOM Based on Diode-Clamped Modular Multilevel Converters

IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, 2017
A new static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) based on the diode-clamped modular multilevel converter (DCM2 C) is proposed in this paper. In this converter topology, the capacitor voltage is clamped by using a low power rating diode in each submodule.

Predictive control of a back to back Diode Clamped Multilevel converter

2010 IEEE International Conference on Industrial Technology, 2010
In this work, a back-to-back Diode Clamped Multilevel converter system using Model Predictive Control is evaluated. DC link voltage balance and currents as main parameters are optimized by means of a proper cost function design. This strategy allows fast system response and capacitors voltage balance under various operating conditions including active ...

A diode-clamped multilevel converter with reduced number of clamping diodes

Nineteenth Annual IEEE Applied Power Electronics Conference and Exposition, 2004. APEC '04., 2004
This paper presents a diode-clamped multilevel converter topology with reduced number of clamping diodes. The novel topology uses a combination of multilevel converter cells with different number of levels. The proposed topology and its switching pattern are discussed based on a five-level converter, and it can be easily extended to N-level converter ...

A Novel Hybrid Voltage Balance Method for Five-Level Diode-Clamped Converters

IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, 2018
Voltage balance control of dc capacitors is the key problem of multilevel diode-clamped converters (DCCs). In this paper, a novel hybrid voltage balance method is proposed for five-level DCCs. First, to balance the upper or lower two capacitors, a novel flying-capacitor-based voltage balance circuit (VBC) is proposed, and the time-domain average model ...

High efficient modeling of a diode clamped Modular Multilevel Converter for EMT simulation

IECON 2016 - 42nd Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society, 2016
Conventional Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) simulations of a Modular Multilevel Converter based HVDC (MMC-HVDC) is quite time consuming. Therefore, the sub modules are often modeled with equivalent transformation methods. In this paper, two equivalent models with much higher efficiency have been presented for a specific MMC topology, i.e.

Voltage Balancing Control of Diode-Clamped Multilevel Converters with Passive Front-Ends

2007 IEEE International Symposium on Industrial Electronics, 2007
In the previous literature, it has been reported that it is not possible to guarantee the balance of the dc-link capacitor voltages of three-phase diode-clamped multilevel dc-ac converters with passive front-ends for high modulation indices, especially for more than three levels.

DC Link Capacitor Voltage Balancing Method for Diode-Clamped Multilevel Converters

2019 IEEE 28th International Symposium on Industrial Electronics (ISIE), 2019
This paper proposes a new capacitor voltage balancing method for diode-clamped multilevel inverters. In this method, proper redundant switching state is selected according to clamp points' voltages. The proposed method is independent of the phase and level numbers and is computationally optimized for practical implementation.

A new balancing technique with power losses minimization in Diode-Clamped Multilevel Converters

2007 European Conference on Power Electronics and Applications, 2007
A new PWM technique, capable of achieving a correct dc-link capacitor voltages balance in Diode- Clamped Multilevel inverters, within the limits defined by the theory, is presented. This result is obtained while decreasing the switching power losses when compared to techniques based on the use of redundant switching vectors.

A novel DVR based on parallel-connected diode-clamped modular multilevel converters

2017 IEEE International Conference on Industrial Technology (ICIT), 2017
The dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) is a fast and efficient solution to voltage sag problems. This paper proposes a new configuration of DVR which is based on the parallel diode-clamped modular multilevel converter (parallel-DCM2C). In the parallel-DCM2C topology the capacitor voltages distributed in the sub-modules (SMs) can be balanced automatically ...

Voltage-balance limits in four-level diode-clamped converters with passive front ends

IEEE 2002 28th Annual Conference of the Industrial Electronics Society. IECON 02, 2003
Multilevel diode-clamped converters with more than three levels cannot maintain voltage balance in the dc-link capacitors for some operating conditions due to the existence of dc currents in the middle points. Since capacitors are either completely charged or discharged for those conditions, this circumstance severely limits practical application of ...
