Different outer membrane c‐type cytochromes are involved in direct interspecies electron transfer to Geobacter or Methanosarcina species

open access: yesmLife, 2022
Direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) may be most important in methanogenic environments, but mechanistic studies of DIET to date have primarily focused on cocultures in which fumarate was the terminal electron acceptor.

Direct Simulation of Electron Transfer Reactions in DNA Radical Cations [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of Physical Chemistry B, 2008
The electron transfer properties of DNA radical cations are important in DNA damage and repair processes. Fast long-range charge transfer has been demonstrated experimentally, but the subtle influences that experimental conditions as well as DNA sequences and geometries have on the details of electron transfer parameters are still poorly understood. In

Adaptive routing behaviors between “touch-go” and direct electron transfer of pyrogenic carbon to promote phosphorus recovery as vivianite

open access: yesWater Research X
Microbial extracellular electron transfer (EET) driven by dissimilatory iron reduction bacteria is considered integral to elemental cycles and biochemical transformations, which involves the synthesis of the phosphate mineral vivianite in both natural ...

Potential for Direct Interspecies Electron Transfer in Methanogenic Wastewater Digester Aggregates

open access: yesmBio, 2011
Mechanisms for electron transfer within microbial aggregates derived from an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor converting brewery waste to methane were investigated in order to better understand the function of methanogenic consortia.

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Organizing the interface—Plasma membrane architecture and receptor dynamics in virus‐cell interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Plasma membranes contain dynamic nanoscale domains that organize lipids and receptors. Because viruses operate at similar scales, this architecture shapes early infection steps, including attachment, receptor engagement, and entry. Using influenza A virus and HIV‐1 as examples, we highlight how receptor nanoclusters, multivalent glycan interactions ...

pH‐mediated activation of the lysosomal arginine sensor SLC38A9

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cells monitor nutrient levels via the lysosomal transporter SLC38A9 to activate the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1). This study reveals that SLC38A9 function is regulated by pH. We identified histidine 544 as a critical pH sensor that undergoes conformational changes to control amino acid efflux from lysosomes; therefore, it ...

A Review on the Interspecies Electron Transfer of Methane Production in Anaerobic Digestion System

open access: yesFermentation, 2023
Anaerobic methanogenesis plays an important role in the sustainable management of high concentration organic wastewater and bioenergy recovery. Interspecies electron transfer (IET) is a new type of mutualistic symbiosis that can accelerate microbial ...

Biophysical approaches for studying viral entry

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Viruses infect all living organisms and have been responsible for major epidemics and pandemics. Their ongoing evolutionary battle with host defenses creates a constant need for improved tools to study viral behavior. Advancing methods to probe viral attachment, fusion, and genome release deepen our understanding of how infections begin and support the
