Classification of tree species and standing dead trees in Boreal forests using UAV‐based RGB, multispectral, and LiDAR point clouds

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
We evaluated single‐ and multi‐sensor UAV approaches for classifying tree species and standing dead trees in boreal forests, focusing on key biodiversity indicators such as European aspen. Using spectral and structural features extracted from RGB, multispectral (MSP), and LiDAR point clouds for 1,205 field‐measured trees, we compared classification ...

Mapping the Residual Stress Distribution in Polycrystalline Quartz Tiger's Eye Using Raman Spectroscopy

open access: yesSmall Methods, EarlyView.
Residual stresses in Tiger’s Eye quartz have been mapped by combining Raman spectroscopy and electron back scatter diffraction. The study quantified stress distributions likely formed during cooling due to the anisotropy of thermal contraction. This non‐destructive methodology provides a reliable baseline for mapping stress in both natural polycrystals

Integrated GNSS Attitude Determination and Positioning for Direct Geo-Referencing

open access: yesSensors, 2014
Direct geo-referencing is an efficient methodology for the fast acquisition of 3D spatial data. It requires the fusion of spatial data acquisition sensors with navigation sensors, such as Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers.

Laser scanning and data integration for three-dimensional digital recording of complex historical structures: The case of mevlana museum [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Terrestrial laser scanning method is widely used in three-dimensional (3-D) modeling projects. Nevertheless it usually requires measurement data from other sources for full measurement of the shapes.

Evaluating machine learning models for multi‐species wildlife detection and identification on remote sensed nadir imagery in South African savanna

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
This research paper investigates the efficacy of leading machine learning (ML) models for detecting and identifying ungulate species in African savanna using nadir imagery from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Traditional aerial counting methods, while widely used, suffer from significant limitations in accuracy and precision, in part due to human ...

Real-Time Single-Frequency GPS/MEMS-IMU Attitude Determination of Lightweight UAVs

open access: yesSensors, 2015
In this paper, a newly-developed direct georeferencing system for the guidance, navigation and control of lightweight unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), having a weight limit of 5 kg and a size limit of 1.5 m, and for UAV-based surveying and remote sensing

Quantifying microhabitat selection of snowshoe hares using forest metrics from UAS‐based LiDAR

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Identifying the spatial and temporal scale at which animals select resources is critical for predicting how populations respond to changes in the environment. The spatial distribution of fine‐scale resources (e.g. patches of dense vegetation) are often linked with critical life‐history requirements such as denning and feeding sites.

Direct Sensor Orientation of a Land-Based Mobile Mapping System

open access: yesSensors, 2011
A land-based mobile mapping system (MMS) is flexible and useful for the acquisition of road environment geospatial information. It integrates a set of imaging sensors and a position and orientation system (POS). The positioning quality of such systems is

Decision Of EO Parameters Based On Direct Georeferencing Using SmartBase

open access: yesJournal of the Korean Society of Surveying, Geodesy, Photogrammetry and Cartography, 2013
Recently, it is a pretty well known way to compute GPS/INS using Continuously Operating Reference Station (CORS) and Network-based RTK for obtaining Exterior Orientation (EO) parameters of aerial photogrammetry. In this study, it is way to compute Exterior Orientation (EO) parameters using ground base stations, using Continuously Operating Reference ...

HOUSING QUESTION OLD AND NEW: Mapping Crowding, Tenure, Rents and Segregation in the Neighborhoods of Major European Cities around 1900 and Today

open access: yesInternational Journal of Urban and Regional Research, EarlyView.
Abstract In a context of unprecedented urbanization, nineteenth‐century European cities faced the ‘housing question’, i.e. precarious housing standards and affordability problems. While existing research has well described these historical housing problems in single‐city studies or in national urbanization histories, to our knowledge, there are hardly ...
