GRCop-42: Comparison between laser powder bed fusion and laser powder direct energy deposition

open access: yesAdditive Manufacturing Letters
This study involves a comparative analysis of additively manufactured GRCop-42 specimens produced using two processes: laser-powder bed fusion (L-PBF) and laser powder direct energy deposition (LP-DED). The investigation characterizes a range of material

A light‐triggered Time‐Resolved X‐ray Solution Scattering (TR‐XSS) workflow with application to protein conformational dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Time‐resolved X‐ray solution scattering captures how proteins change shape in real time under near‐native conditions. This article presents a practical workflow for light‐triggered TR‐XSS experiments, from data collection to structural refinement. Using a calcium‐transporting membrane protein as an example, the approach can be broadly applied to study ...

Preparation of the group III nitride thin films AlN, GaN, InN by direct and reactive pulsed laser ablation

open access: yesInternational Journal of Photoenergy, 2001
The methods of preparation of the group III nitrides AlN, GaN, and InN by laser ablation (i.e. laser sputtering), is here reviewed including studies on their properties. The technique, concerns direct ablation of nitride solid targets by laser to produce

Analysing the significance of small conformational changes and low occupancy states in serial crystallographic data

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This protocol paper outlines methods to establish the success of a time‐resolved serial crystallographic experiment, by means of statistical analysis of timepoint data in reciprocal space and models in real space. We show how to amplify the signal from excited states to visualise structural changes in successful experiments.

Laser Irradiation Responses of a Single-Crystal Diamond Produced by Different Crystal Growth Methods

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2017
Responses of two types of single-crystal diamonds, prepared by chemical vapour deposition (CVD) and high pressure high temperature synthesis (HPHT) methods, respectively, to a nanosecond pulsed neodymium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet (Nd:YAG) laser were

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

Surface Wettability Modification of Cyclic Olefin Polymer by Direct Femtosecond Laser Irradiation

open access: yesNanomaterials, 2015
The effect of laser irradiation on surface wettability of cyclic olefin polymer (COP) was investigated. Under different laser parameters, a superhydrophilic or a superhydrophobic COP surface with a water contact angle (WCA) of almost 0° or 163 ...

From energy provision to protein synthesis: Tunnelling nanotubes as mediators of intercellular metabolic cooperation in cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The cytoskeleton‐mediated transport of mitochondria via tunnelling nanotubes restores respiration, increases ATP production, rescues cells from apoptosis, activates the AKT/mTOR signalling pathway, promotes cell migration and invasiveness, contributes to cancer progression and treatment resistance.

Optimization of single-pass geometric characteristics of IN718 by fiber laser via linear regression and response surface methodology

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research and Technology, 2023
Direct laser deposition is among the critical processes for fabricating and reconstructing parts. This study investigated a single-pass laser coating of Inconel 718 superalloy powder on the same substrate using a continuous fiber laser.
