Direct Observation of Carbamoylnitrenes
Chemistry – A European Journal, 2016AbstractAs the prototype Curtius rearrangement reaction, carbamoyl azide decomposes into aminoisocyanate and molecular nitrogen. However, the key intermediate carbamoylnitrene was previously undetected, even though the decomposition of carbamoyl azides has been studied frequently since its discovery in the 1890s.

Direct observation of methoxycarbonylnitrene
Chemical Communications, 2017Methoxycarbonylnitrene CH3OC(O)N, the missing link in the frequently studied Curtius-rearrangement of CH3OC(O)N has been directly observed by using matrix-isolation IR and EPR spectroscopy.

Observation of Magnetoelectric Directional Anisotropy
Physical Review Letters, 2002We report the first observation of a new optical phenomenon, magnetoelectric directional anisotropy (MEA). MEA is a polarization-independent anisotropy which occurs in crossed electric field E and magnetic field B perpendicular to the wave vector k of the light. It is described by a contribution to the refractive index of the form (delta)n=(gamma)k x E

Direct observation of microbubbles in directional solidification of salol
Physical Review Letters, 1990Dynamic light scattering at the crystal-melt interface of solidifying salol was followed for 14 days. The hydrodynamic radius deduced from intensity correlation data increased continuously from {approx}1 to {approx}100 {mu}m. When the scattering layer was trapped by the advancing crystal front, microscopic observation revealed bubbles as inclusions ...

Direct observation of vinyl hydroperoxide
Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics, 2015A doubly hydrogen-bonded interaction between the Criegee intermediate and a deuterated carboxylic acid facilitates efficient H/D transfer to yield a partially deuterated vinyl hydroperoxide.

Direct Observation of Electrocatalytic Synergy
Journal of the American Chemical Society, 2007Here we describe an approach that directly and unambiguously establishes the synergistic effect between surfaces when brought into close proximity (A's regime) through the use of a scanning tunneling microscope. As a model system, we have employed the electrocatalytic oxidation of CO chemisorbed onto a Pt(111) single-crystal electrode upon engaging a ...

Direct Experimental Observation of CS2OH
ChemPhysChem, 2006AbstractThe first experimental detection of CS2OH is reported. CS2OH was observed for about one microsecond after its formation, as an intact isolated species in the gas phase. It was generated by electron transfer to the CS2OH+ ion, prepared in the source of a multisector mass spectrometer by suitable ion–molecule reactions.
