Sand-Nonwoven geotextile interfaces shear strength by direct shear and simple shear tests
Geomechanics and Engineering, 2015Soil-reinforcement interaction mechanism is an important issue in the design of geosynthetic reinforced soil structures. This mechanism depends on the soil properties, reinforcement characteristics and interaction between these two elements (soil and reinforcement).

Shear behaviour of a cement grout tested in the direct shear test
Construction and Building Materials, 2018Abstract Portland cement grouts are widely used in the mining industry to bond cable bolts with the surrounding rockmass. Numerous laboratory and field tests showed that bond failure of the cable/grout interface is the dominant failure mode. Previous research has found that shear behaviour of the grout along a pre-defined plane plays a significant ...

2014 Joint Rail Conference, 2014
This paper summarizes the appropriate equipment and test procedure for ballast shear strength testing using the direct shear method (ASTM D3080 and D5321) and presents some typical results. To accomplish this ballast testing, a full-scale direct shear box was developed that can accommodate an approximately 1 m (3 feet) wide and 0.6 m (2 feet) deep ...

Development of a New Direct Shear Testing Apparatus
Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering, 2009Politecnico di Torino and G.D.S. Instruments Ltd, UK has developed an innovative servo controlled direct shear apparatus named High Pressure Back Pressure Shear Apparatus-HPBPSA. The apparatus allows direct shear tests to be performed under closely controlled conditions in terms of axial load and back pressure applied to the specimen.

Experimental data from unreinforced direct shear tests on sand are presented to show the influence of the boundary conditions on the test measurements. The data and the theoretical considerations of the loading in the test show that a symmetrical direct shear test arrangement is preferable.

Direct shear tests on reinforced sand
International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Mining Sciences & Geomechanics Abstracts, 1987New data are presented from internal measurements in direct shear tests on sand. An interpretation is given for the plane strain angle of friction and the angle of dilation of sand in a direct shear test. The direct shear angle of friction deduced from the conventional analysis is shown to under-estimate the frictional shearing resistance of sand by ...

Investigation of shear performance of UHPC by direct shear tests
Engineering Structures, 2019Abstract Ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) has been applied widely in modern structure construction. The outstanding mechanical properties of UHPC not only enable strong yet slim structural designs but also highlight its potential in protective structural constructions against extreme loads.

Simple shear tests with a varying shearing direction during cyclic shearing
Géotechnique Letters, 2014Tests with cyclic lateral loading on a pile have shown that the pile reacts to a change of loading direction with increasing accumulation of lateral displacements. This phenomenon is known as ‘pile drift’. To investigate this behaviour at small scale under laboratory conditions, a specifically designed simple shear apparatus with two shearing axes was

Scaling Effects in Direct Shear Tests
AIP Conference Proceedings, 2009Laboratory experiments of the direct shear test were performed on spherical particles of different materials and diameters. Results of the bulk friction vs. non‐dimensional shear displacement are presented as a function of the non‐dimensional particle diameter. Simulations of the direct shear test were performed using the Discrete Element Method (DEM).

Development of a Large Direct Shear Testing Box for Direct and Interface Shear Testing
Geotechnical Testing JournalABSTRACT Understanding the strength of interfaces between soils and other construction materials is critical for analyzing soil-structure interaction effects on buried and embedded structures. These interface friction angles are often taken from general design tables and correlations because of the need for specialized equipment to ...
