Direct shear machine for testing rock joints

International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Mining Sciences & Geomechanics Abstracts, 1985
Abstract Most direct shear machines are designed for soil testing or research and have serious limitations when used for rock joint testing by commercial testing laboratories. To overcome some of these limitations, a machine has been designed that uses split cylindrical specimen holders to encapsulate rock specimens in the field ...

A numerical examination of the direct shear test

Géotechnique, 2007
The paper presents results of two-dimensional simulations of the direct shear test using the discrete element method (DEM). The heterogeneous distributions of stress and strain are illustrated and, taking advantage of the numerical technique, the evolution of the stress tensor and porosity changes in the shear zone are monitored.

Numerical Simulations of the Direct Shear Test

Chemical Engineering & Technology, 2003
AbstractNumerical simulations of the direct shear test have been performed under constant normal stress conditions, using the Discrete Element Method. Results are presented to show how the average shear to normal stress ratio acting on the shear band compares with the force data at the boundaries.

Geophysical Characterization of Shear Zone in Direct Shear Test

2011
Shear behavior of granular soils largely affects the safety and stability of underground and earth structures. This study presents the characteristics of the shear zone in a direct shear test using shear wave and electric resistivity measurements. An innovative direct shear box made of transparent non-conductive acrylic material has been developed to ...

Scale dependence of direct shear tests

Science Bulletin, 2009
Direct shear test has been widely used to measure the shear strength of soils and other particulate materials in industry because of its simplicity. However, the results can be dependent on the specimen size. The ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) publications suggest that for testing soils the shear box should be at least ten times the ...

Use of Borehole Shear Test to Obtain Shear Strength Data Comparison to Direct Shear Test

2018
The knowledge of shear strength geotechnical parameters, cohesion and friction angle, is necessary for many engineering works and slope stability analysis. Traditionally, the Direct Shear Test (DST) in the laboratory is used to determine these parameters.

Direct shear testing of seeds in bulk

Journal of Agricultural Engineering Research, 1980
Abstract To apply existing theories to the prediction of wall pressures in the structures for the storage of agricultural seeds it is necessary to know the shear properties of the materials to be stored. Equipment already used in soil engineering is unsuitable because of the lower stresses involved in testing seeds and the larger particle sizes.

Direct Shear Testing of Rockfill Material

Soil and Rock Behavior and Modeling, 2006
The shear strength of granular materials is mainly derived from the particle sliding friction and resistance resulting from reorientation and sample dilatancy. Parameters affecting the shear strength therefore depend on the relative density, gradation, particle strength, particle size and shape, and degree of saturation of the specimen. In this study a

Shear Strength of an Accumulation Soil from Direct Shear Test

Marine Georesources & Geotechnology, 2014
The present study focuses on the shear strength of the loose accumulation soil induced by the 2008 Sichuan earthquake. A series of direct shear box tests was performed to characterize the shear strength of the accumulation soil, under drained conditions.
