Direct Contact Steam Generation Reduces Carbon Intensity

SPE Improved Oil Recovery Conference, 2022
Abstract Steam for enhanced oil recovery is typically generated using Once-Through-Steam-Generators (OTSG) produced at large central facilities with the steam then pipelined to each injection well. As much as 50% of the energy can be lost before it reaches the well bore with the combustion emissions vented to atmosphere ...

Direct steam generation in parallel pipes

International Journal of Multiphase Flow, 2003
Summary: Two-phase flow in parallel pipes is associated with the application of direct steam generation (DSG) by solar heating using parabolic troughs focusing solar power. In this process water is fed into parallel pipes from a common manifold. Owing to local cloud cover or difference in the focusing quality, each pipe may receive a different heating ...

Modelling of parabolic trough direct steam generation solar collectors

Solar Energy, 1998
Solar electric generation systems (SEGS) currently in operation are based on parabolic trough solar collectors using synthetic oil heat transfer fluid in the collector loop to transfer thermal energy to a Rankine cycle turbine via a heat exchanger. To improve performance and reduce costs direct steam generation in the collector has been proposed.

Field Test of Water-Steam Separators for Direct Steam Generation in Parabolic Troughs

Journal of Solar Energy Engineering, 2007
Direct steam generation (DSG) represents a promising option to improve today’s parabolic trough technology for solar thermal power generation. The European DISS and INDITEP projects have proven the feasibility of the DSG process under real solar conditions at the DISS test facility at the Plataforma Solar de Almería (PSA) (Zarza, E., Valenzuela, L ...

Direct steam generation in solar boilers

IEEE Control Systems, 2004
This article describes the DISS facility, followed by an explanation of the main control problem. The control schemes for one of the three operating modes, the once-through mode, are then discussed, including system models, feedforward blocks, and PI blocks. Finally, experimental results and conclusion are presented.

Receiver behavior in direct steam generation with parabolic troughs

Solar Energy, 1997
Abstract The receiver behavior of parabolic troughs in direct steam generation (DSG) has been studied under different experimental conditions. When cool water was fed into steel receiver pipes (∅=2.54 cm), the pipes deflected. This bend advanced like a wave from the inlet to the outlet end, having a deflection of about 6.5 cm at the center of each ...

Optimisation of Paraboloidal Dish Fields for Direct-Steam Generation

Volume 1: Advances in Solar Buildings and Conservation; Climate Control and the Environment; Alternate Fuels and Infrastructure; ARPA-E; Combined Energy Cycles, CHP, CCHP, and Smart Grids; Concentrating Solar Power; Economic, Environmental, and Policy Aspects of Alternate Energy; Geothermal Energy, Harvesting, Ocean Energy and Other Emerging Technologies; Hydrogen Energy Technologies; Low/Zero Emission Power Plants and Carbon Sequestration; Micro and Nano Technology Applications and Materials, 2015
We investigate losses and costs associated with direct steam generation via parabolidal dish concentrators and steam transport to a central steam Rankine power cycle for electricity generation. This study presents a power plant model that accounts for the effects of shading, steam transport, energy conversion at the power block, and capital costs of ...

Comparison of Direct Steam Generation and Indirect Steam Generation of Solar Rankine Cycles Under Libyan Climate Conditions

2021
The objective of this study is to investigate comparison of direct steam generation (DSG) and indirect steam generation which normally named as heat transfer fluid (HTF) under Libyan climate conditions in terms of performance. Furthermore, water and thermal oil are selected as a heat transfer fluids for the system.

Steamdrive Direct Contact Steam Generation for SAGD

Canadian Unconventional Resources Conference, 2011
Abstract In recent years there has been a shift in the Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) steam generation technologies from the traditional Once Through Steam Generator (OTSG) and lime based water softening towards the use of an evaporator and industrial High Pressure (HP) steam boilers.
