In today's world words such as 'mobile' and 'mobility' have strong impact in their figurative meanings; in the world of the professional health carer their literal meaning has been of prime importance throughout the ages. The patient who is physically mobile or has some means of mobility maintains a measure of freedom or independence which in turn ...

With the continued explosion of genetic technology, the number of disorders amenable to screening is expanding geometrically. Historically, most genetic screening has been in the newborn period. Much more can be done for the fetus if genetic screening and diagnosis are accomplished early in the pregnancy rather than after birth.

The filling-in theory of brightness perception has gained much attention recently owing to the success of vision models. However, the theory and its instantiations have suffered from incorrectly dealing with transitive brightness relations. This paper describes an advance in the filling-in theory that overcomes the problem. The advance is incorporated

Simplicity is a reasonably common property of reflectors, which corresponds to particularly well-behaved factorization systems. This paper defines and studies directness, a concept obtained from the essential ingredients in the definition of simplicity: a pointed endofunctor \((R,r)\) in a category is called direct if for each morphism \(f:x\to y\) the

Disjoint directed quadrilaterals in a directed graph
Journal of Graph Theory, 2005AbstractLet D be a directed graph of order 4k, where k is a positive integer. Suppose that the minimum degree of D is at least 6k − 2. We show that D contains k disjoint directed quadrilaterals with only one exception. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Direct Manipulation, Direct Engagement, and Direct Perception: What's Directing What?
Proceedings of the Human Factors Society Annual Meeting, 1988The term “direct” has been used quite liberally in recent discussions of human performance and human-machine systems. Shneiderman (1983) discusses “direct manipulation”; Hutchins, Hollan and Norman (1986) discuss “direct engagement”; and Gibson (1979) discusses “direct perception”.

AbstractRecent findings related to the mesentery clarified the organisation of the abdomen at the foundational level. The Mesenteric-based model of abdominal anatomy articlulates a foundation that re-unites scientific and clinical approaches to the abdomen in health and disease.
