A directional borehole radar: numerical and experimental verification
We present the simulation and design of an antenna system for a borehole radar. To obtain a directional radiation pattern the transmitting dipole is shielded with a reflector. The generated transient wavefield, with a centre frequency of 100 MHz, is reflected in the desired direction by a perfectly conducting cylindrically curved plate.

A Compact Ferrite-Based Dipole Directional Antenna for Borehole Radar Application
IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letters, 2013A compact ferrite-based directional antenna has been designed to serve in a directional borehole radar system with a center frequency at 100 MHz and a bandwidth from 70 to 180 MHz. The parameters of the antenna are with a 6:1 power front-to-back ratio and a ±60° directional diagram at half peak amplitude, and the tailing duration of the receiving pulse

Experiments in skarn with a polarization-sensitive directional borehole radar
This paper describes experimental results carried out in skarn deposits with a polarization-sensitive directional borehole radar. This radar employs a dipole array and loop antenna in a borehole (DALAB), which was proposed in a previous study. This radar system was applied to polarimetric radar measurement of a fault and sphalerite veins in skarn.

3-D Imaging of a Planar Interface Close to a Borehole with an Array-Type Directional Borehole Radar
We propose an algorithm for creating a 3-D image of a planar interface with an array-type directional borehole radar. In this paper, we focus on the situation when the radar probe is close to the planar interface. In such circumstances, the reflected wave from the planar interface may be incident on the receiving array antenna at very steep elevation ...

Directional Borehole Radar With Dipole Antenna Array Using Optical Modulators
IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, 2004In this paper, we describe a directional borehole radar comprising a dipole antenna array with an optical modulator capable of determining the position of targets in three dimensions (3-D). Optical modulators using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer are used to transform electrical signals into optical signals at the feeding points of the dipole antennas ...

Small-diameter directional borehole radar system with 3D sensing capability
This paper describes a new directional borehole radar system and its field testing. The system uses a thin radar probe (57 mm diameter) and a circular dipole array directive antenna. The radar is of the step frequency type with a network analyzer. Through careful antenna design, we were able to achieve the compact radar probe and precise measurement at

We propose a polarization-sensitive directional borehole radar with a dipole array and loop antenna in a borehole (DALAB), along with an algorithm for radar signal processing. This radar enables us to discriminate between a vertical conducting cylinder and inhomogeneity in soil in 3-D space.

Analysis of a direct wave in directional borehole radar with a circular dipole array antenna
In this paper, we discuss influence of radar sonde on a direct wave in singlehole directional borehole radar using a circular dipole array. The numerical simulation shows that the guided wave, HE 11 mode, is excited at the higher frequencies than 200 MHz only when the radar sonde is eccentered in a water-filled borehole.
