A decade of directional borehole radar services: From past to future

open access: yes2012 14th International Conference on Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), 2012
While conventional GPR investigations are carried out on the surface/ 2D plane, delivering 2D information, Borehole Radar is applied in a 3D space. A borehole radar system for a total 3D space investigation has to distinguish between the directions around the tool axis to allow a 3D interpretation of the data. During the past decade a powerful tool was

Linear Prediction-Based DOA Estimation for Directional Borehole Radar 3-D Imaging

IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, 2019
Directional borehole radar (BR) 3-D imaging is a challenging problem due to its limited observation space within a borehole. We present a linear prediction (LP)-based direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation and a migration-based 3-D imaging algorithm for the directional BR, which is composed of a transmitting antenna and a uniform circular array ...

High range resolution directional borehole radar for 3-D fracture delineation

open access: yes2009 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2009
Directional borehole radar was developed for detection of three-dimensional (3-D) target localization in single-hole radar measurement. Phase differences among four dipole elements of receiving circular array uniquely determine an azimuth direction of a reflected wave. Receiving voltages of dipole elements are measured by optical electric field sensors

The detection of cracks in blast-holes using directional borehole radar

open access: yes2016 16th International Conference on Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), 2016
The detection of subsurface cracks and moisture in blast-holes is an important problem to be solved in open-cut coal mining. During the overburden removal process at open-cut coal mines, blast-holes are drilled and filled with ANFO explosive. Any explosive that extends into surrounding cracks within the blast-hole has the potential to remain unexploded

A Directional Borehole Radar System

Subsurface Sensing Technologies and Applications, 2002
In this paper we present the simulation and design of a directional borehole radar. In addition we discuss an imaging method for the radar system. The antenna system contains an electric dipole which is in one direction shielded by a cylindrical perfectly conducting reflector.
