Application of machine learning to accidents detection at directional drilling [PDF]
We present a data-driven algorithm and mathematical model for anomaly alarming at directional drilling. The algorithm is based on machine learning. It compares the real-time drilling telemetry with one corresponding to past accidents and analyses the level of similarity.

Hybrid machine learning for pullback force forecasting during horizontal directional drilling
Automation in Construction, 2021Abstract This paper presents a hybrid machine learning model for predicting the pullback force in horizontal directional drilling (HDD) construction. The model combines the nondominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II) and support vector machine (SVM). NSGA-II is used to optimize two hyperparameters in SVM.

Picking the Optimum Directional Drilling Technology (RSS vs PDM): A Machine Learning-Based Model
Volume 10: Petroleum Technology, 2022Abstract Introducing rotary steerable systems (RSS) to the drilling industry has extended the directional drilling envelope to new horizons. Its role in better hole cleaning, faster rate of penetration (ROP), and less stuck pipe incidents is unquestionable. However, it comes with more economical challenges in terms of operating rates and

Machine Learning for Improved Directional Drilling
Offshore Technology Conference, 2018Abstract Directional drilling is a complex process involving the remote control of tool alignment and force application to a very long drill string subject to variable external forces. Controlling bit tool face orientation while ensuring adequate rate of penetration (ROP) is quite challenging, with aspects that have been described as ...
